Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B

The process the organization uses to review the 990 includes having tax forms prepared by a CPA. The CPA/tax preparer shares the initial files with the Executive Director and the board of directors for review. College Tribe also requests that the bookkeeper/accounting professional responsible for maintaining the books also review the drafted 990 files. The board, ED and accounting professional shares any notes or questions with the tax preparer regarding the 990. The tax preparer shares updates which are reviewed for a final approval by the board. The approved files are then submitted to the IRS.

In response to COVID-19, College Tribe transitioned all in-person programs to live virtual programs. Youth, mentors and instructors were invited to connect, learn and grow in a community committed to addressing the pandemic and its negative effects with empathy and foresight. College Tribe recognized the educational disparities that would be heightened by the impact of COVID-19 and introduced students, parents and representatives from our partner schools to virtual sitters. Virtual sitters are individuals who are trained to assist youth who are either struggling with online classes or are not performing at their in-school levels. The organization has also moved its mentoring and afterschool programs online as a way to alleviate some of the strains caused by the pandemic.

Summary of Fundraising Activity Each year, College Tribe hosts a backpack giveaway, or a back to school event to provide low income youth in SE DC with much needed supplies. In order to ensure the number of families signing up for supplies received the tools necessary for success during the school year, College Tribe hosted a JustGiving fundraiser to support the efforts. This fundraising drive generated 2,000 which helped to support 30 youth in need of school supplies. In the Spring of 2019 College Tribe was added to the new class of DC based nonprofits in the Catalogue for Philanthropy. With the support of the Catalogue, College Tribe participated in Giving Tuesday on two occasions within the fiscal year. Those fundraising activities provided College Tribe with nearly 4000 in support from individual donors.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4

MENTORING Since 2007, College Tribe has distinguished its mentoring program from other mentor based organizations by using research, feedback and participant outcomes. Connecting Black boys from predominantly low income environments in Southeast Washington, D.C. with black men who have overcome the odds to find success in education, their career paths and or military commitments has allowed College Tribe to support youth with a model that focuses on proximity to the root cause of some disparities within the black male community. STEM In 2010 College Tribe added STEM education to its portfolio of services to create a bridge between access to STEM careers and STEM based higher education for low-income schools in Southeast, Washington, DC. These schools generally lack access to capital necessary for providing high quality STEM education, or they lack access to capital to recruit high performing instructors. College Tribe partners with these schools to provide out of school time activities and programs that assist in creating pathways towards careers in STEM. ARTS In 2017 College Tribe began partnering with professional artists to train youth in key skills necessary for developing cultural awareness and other linguistic skills necessary for success in life. These artistic collaborations conclude with projects that students develop on their own and receive guidance on from local professionals. The projects are shared with a public audience to introduce youth to professional outcomes, procedures and planning. Our predominant target audience is low income, Black boys who live or attend schools in Wards 7 8 of Washington, DC.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0In response to COVID-19, College Tribe transitioned all in-person programs to live virtual programs.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Summary of Fundraising Activity Each year, College Tribe hosts a backpack giveaway, or a back to school event to provide low income youth in SE DC with much needed supplies.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3MENTORING Since 2007, College Tribe has distinguished its mentoring program from other mentor based organizations by using research, feedback and participant outcomes.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4The process the organization uses to review the 990 includes having tax forms prepared by a CPA.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5Changes in net assets represent a shift in fundraising activities and grant writing for the fiscal year. College Tribes
