“The Organizations Treasurer is responsible for the timely preparation of the annual Form 990 including all required schedules and attachments in consultation with the Organizations independent certified public accountant CPA or tax professional. A draft of the completed Form 990 is provided to all members for review and discussion at a formal meeting or via electronic distribution prior to the filing deadline of December 15. Board members are encouraged to critically analyze the contents paying particular attention to the reported financial data program service accomplishments governance practices and compensation information to ensure the form is accurate complete and consistent with the organizations mission and public perception. Any questions or concerns raised during the review are addressed by the responsible officer and if necessary the CPA or legal counsel. Appropriate changes are incorporated into the final document. The final approved Form 990 is then signed by an authorized officer and submitted to the IRS with a copy retained in the Organizations records. The organization makes the Form 990 publicly available as required by law.”

Connecting aspiring young scientists to the power of scientific discovery and empowering them with the knowledge skills and dispositions to become 21st century leaders of innovation is central to Coastal Marine Biolabs primary mission. We believe that at the core of scientific creativity and innovation is a scientific culture of bright imaginative and motivated people with diverse life experiences perspectives and ethnic racial cultural and educational backgrounds. Coastal Marine Biolabs practices and policies exemplify this belief and our contention that an atmosphere of mutual respect and dignity will promote the highest levels of learning achievement and scientific advancements for the betterment of humanity. Coastal Marine Biolabs Integrative Biosciences Program Inc. CMB is a nonprofit corporation organized and operated exclusively for educational purposes. Pursuant to our tax-exempt purpose CMB develops model programs and educational resources aimed at improving high school teaching and learning which is beneficial to the local community and society at large. In furtherance of this overarching goal our organization conducts the following four primary activities: 1. RESIDENTIAL RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Hosted at the CMB lab residential research institutes provide high school students with a rare glimpse into the daily practice of science and a unique opportunity to experience how research is conducted in real-world scientific settings. These fast-paced and intensely focused 10-day experiences unfold under the supervision of Ph.D.- level scientists within an academically challenging but nurturing environment that highlights the collaborative nature of science inquiry and the connections that exist among scientific disciplines. Each institute is designed to emulate a graduate-level learning environment where students participate in engaging and interactive discussions with CMB faculty and visiting researchers learn advanced life science concepts and methods that erode disciplinary boundaries contribute real data to ongoing scientific projects and communicate their research and its significance in a public forum. Our primary goal is to help students envision their future roles and responsibilities as members of a global scientific social network that is dedicated to improving human and planetary health. Approximately 15 percent of our organizations time and budget is allocated to this activity. 2. STUDENT INTERNSHIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Internships hosted at our facility enable a select number of high school students to work alongside scientists on locally relevant projects in a wide array of research areas. Student interns working under the supervision of CMB scientists or their partners have contributed to studies of environmental water quality in our coastal watershed provided resources to examine the relationship between otolith shape and various ecological biogeographic factors in rockfishes conducted ultrastructural analyses of a local hydrocoral species and participated in a statewide marine biotoxin monitoring program hosted by the California Department of Public Health. Internships are offered on an invitation-only basis to students enrolled at partner high schools in the Ventura Unified School District and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Approximately 5 percent of our organizations time and budget is allocated to this activity. 3. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR HIGH SCHOOL COURSEWORK For this activity CMB faculty work alongside educators in our facility on the development of curriculum resources that teachers can bring into the science classroom and lab to stimulate student interest in science careers and achieve a number of positive student outcomes relevant to success in 21st century science career settings. Our approach to curriculum development responds to state and national learning goals”
