Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Schoolhouse supplies promotes educational equity in portland area public schools by providing free school supplies to underserved students. Our goal is to ensure that every child has access to the learning tools that allow them to achieve academic success, regardless of their family's income or racial/ethnic identity. The program delivery model achieves additional goals through community engagement and by keeping supplies out of the waste stream.

To serve classrooms in need by operating a volunteer-run free store for teachers.since opening our doors in 1999, our mission remains the same: to support public education by providing free school supplies to students in need. We do this because we believe that every child deserves school supplies and has the right to a quality education regardless of their family's income or racial/ethnic identity. Our ultimate goal is to level the playing field so every child has access to the tools that allow them to achieve academic success and feel confident. The program delivery model achieves additional goals through community engagement and by keeping supplies out of the waste stream. With the community's support, schoolhouse supplies has distributed nearly $57 million in free school supplies and benefitted hundreds of thousands of children.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The complete form 990 is reviewed by the full board of directors prior to its filing with the internal revenue service. The treasurer of the board of directors, the full finance committee, and the executive director all undertake a detailed review of the form 990 prior to its presentation to the full board for their review and comment.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization's conflict of interest policies mandate an annual disclosure of all possible conflicts, as well as disclosure throughout the course of the year if and when potential conflicts arise. At least annually, all board members and all key employees are asked to certify in writing the existence, or lack thereof, any conflicts of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The executive director submits a written self-evaluation to the board chair. The board chair also completes an evaluation of the executive director's performance. This data is then reviewed by the executive committee with consideration of historical increases to decide on appropriate compensation. The executive committee also considers appropriate comparable data and documents its process and all decisions reached.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its governing instruments, conflict of interest policies, and financial statements available to the public upon request.
