“Seven years ago the hershey center for applied research (hcar), in partnership with the hershey trust co., opened its doors with the vision of becoming a leader in the life science industry. Thanks in part to the economic development administration of the department of commerce, the commonwealth of pa, and the capitol region economic development corporation; hcar is now a thriving hot spot for research, development, as well as commercialization projects from all over the world. From a new zealand bred company that has evolved to a us company known as pacific edge diagnostics, usa ltd. Researching, and soon research born out of the penn state milton s. Hershey college of medicine, and a company called apogee biotechnologies, inc. That is developing novel therapies to treat cancers and inflammatory diseases, to several businesses that are creating new products for health and technology, as well as service providers from around the world like ide+ and vivopharm from australia that fill essential needs to this community and the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Today hcar is home to some of the brightest minds in innovation. Our state of the art facility and great partnerships continue to keep our region on the cutting edge of the life science industry. But we're not done growing yet. We want to open the doors even further. Imagine a place where the best minds in life science, meet the best minds across other high technology industries, as well as academia, and they intersect with those in the business world; and daily they live, work, play, learn, and collaborate with one another. In the past several years hcar has expanded its reach into other high technology sectors such as it/software development, clean energy, applied materials, and additive manufacturing. Apak inc. And nict, inc., two software developers, have recently joined us in building 1 with several other prospects interested in becoming members of the community. We are actively looking for prospects for the next stage of development. We continue to develop the innovation/start up community component of hcar. Many of these activities are done in conjunction with the office of technology development penn state milton s. Hershey college of medicine. All educational programming in this regard is done together. In 2013, 35 educational sessions were held targeting this activity. The programming included: innovation cafe-monthly/bi-monthly techcelerator-quarterly sbir training-biannual technology development series-quarterly ideas in innovation-monthly faculty entrepreneur club-monthly entrepreneur's round table-bi-monthly commercialization committee--bimonthly in addition we held 65 meetings aimed at economic development which ranged in scope from partnering meetings at trade shows like the international bio meeting in boston, meetings with local, state, and regional leaders to unite and work in tandem towards economic development initiatives, to direct prospect development meetings.”
