Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

“In September 2005, JAS received its determination letter from the Internal Revenue Service indicating that it is exempt from income taxes other than net unrelated business income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In 2010, JAS completed the period subject to a public support test. Under the facts and circumstances test prescribed by regulations, JAS believes it has met the public support test under Section 509(a)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code. The provisions included in accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America provide consistent guidance for the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an entity's financial statements and prescribe a threshold of "more likely than not" for recognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. JAS performed an evaluation of uncertain tax positions as of December 31, 2014, and determined that there were no matters that would require recognition in the accompanying financial statements or which may have any effect on its tax-exempt status. As of December 31, 2014, the statute of limitations for tax years 2009 through 2014 remains open with the U.S. Federal jurisdiction and the various states and local jurisdictions in which JAS files tax returns. It is JAS's policy to recognize interest and/or penalties for uncertain tax positions, if any, as income tax expense in the statement of activities and changes in net assets.”

Launched a judicial outreach civic education project called Our Courts America, established a website, and worked with Honorary Chair Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on civics education panel and video. Specific accomplishments included: substantial earned national media coverage, fair courts advocates have the data and arguments they need to make the case for reforms in their states, organizational video capacity launched and in-house studio established.

Trained state leaders and engaged consultants to do the same. Specific accomplishments include: creating fair courts field capacity to engage grassroots, drawing new state players into the fair courts field and building their expertise and connections to each other.

Distributed it to more than 3,000 judges, bar leaders, legal aid providers, court administrations, foundations, and fair courts advocates. Worked with state leaders in several states to advocate for adequate funding for courts. Specific accomplishments include: changing the conversation in the country by helping court leaders describe needs of citizens for adequately funded courts and timely justice; and helping leaders in Michigan, New Mexico and Oregon increase funding for state courts. Iowa video, widely viewed, featured JAS funding guidebook in the weeks and months before funding restored to Iowa State Courts.
