IRS990/Desc0Parkinson Voice Project provides intensive voice therapy (SPEAK OUT!) followed by an ongoing maintenance program (The LOUD Crowd) to help people with Parkinson's and related neurological disorders regain and maintain their ability to speak. SPEAK OUT! consists of individual voice therapy sessions provided by licensed speech-language pathologists to improve the strength and coordination of the speech mechanism. Since the muscles used for speaking are the same used for swallowing, improving the voice often improves the swallowing. Over 70% of patients treated report improved swallowing abilities. This may minimize the risk of requiring feeding tubes and also minimize the risk of developing life-threatening aspiration-induced pneumonia. The LOUD Crowd consists of weekly speech groups, a singing program, and care partner groups led by speech-language pathologists, a choral director, and a professional counselor. Parkinson Voice Project conducts over 400 LOUD Crowd groups each year.
