(4a) programs for children sanibel sea school's primary client group is school-aged children. Programs for children ages 4-18 include day classes, week-long non-residential camps, educational expeditions, leadership training for teens, field trips for school groups, and outreach programs for children in underserved local communities. Programs are designed to inspire a meaningful connection with the ocean, while helping participants develop confidence and skills that will serve them well into the future. Day classes, camps, and field trips for 4-13 year olds expose students to the marine world in a fieldbased setting, supplementing the education that they receive in the classroom with tangible, memorable experiences to deepen their understanding of marine biology and the ocean's role in supporting the health of our planet. Activities like surfing, canoeing, and snorkeling lead participants to overcome fears and grow more confident in their abilities to achieve their goals and overcome challenges in all facets of life. Older children can participate in a counselor-in-training (cit) program, designed to teach them the skills needed for leadership, teamwork, and their future employment. Through theory and practice, cits are taught how to be leaders. They are treated with gentleness and respect, but are shown how to carry out the responsibilities they are now capable of and become positive role models. Educational expeditions provide an opportunity for older teens to experience marine ecosystems farther afield, including the caloosahatchee river and coral reefs in the florida keys, bahamas, and belize. Participants learn about and discuss current challenges facing these habitats, collaborate to conceptualize solutions, and engage in real, long-term scientific research. Expedition students leave with an enhanced ability to question, examine, and improve our world. Outreach programs are provided to underserved students in our region through partnerships with fellow nonprofit organizations that offer after- school or weekend programs for children. Many of these students live just miles from the beach, but rarely get to experience or learn about the sea in a formal, educational setting outside of their visits to sanibel sea school. Funded by donations, these groups are transported from their "landlocked" inland communities to sanibel island once or twice per month to explore and study the ocean. Donor-funded scholarships are also offered for one hundred percent of our children's programs by request, and are provided on an as-needed basis. An organization-wide policy does not allow cost to prevent any student from participating in ocean learning. Programs for adults sanibel sea school provides educational experiences to adults through classroom lectures, field trips, and community events. Classroom lectures are delivered by expert educational staff and focus on locally relevant topics including endangered and invasive species, water quality issues, and climate change. Students are provided with knowledge and simple strategies to work towards solving some of the environmental challenges that face southwest florida. Sometimes, participants request classroom-based learning opportunities due to limited mobility, in which case every effort is made to bring the beach to them using props and multimedia presentations. Boat and land-based field trips elaborate on classroom topics and provide more general exposure to sanibel's wildlife and ecosystems in a field-based setting. These programs are designed to help participants discover hard- to-reach habitats and support and inspire lifelong learning, and students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussion, and suggest future topics of interest. Some field-based classes focus on specific skills, including fishing and stand-up paddleboarding, to help adults develop hobbies that will lead them to forge a deeper connection with the ocean. Past community events have included documentary s

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0(4A) PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN SANIBEL SEA SCHOOL'S PRIMARY CLIENT GROUP IS SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN. PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS SANIBEL SEA SCHOOL PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES TO ADULTS THROUGH CLASSROOM LECTURES, FIELD TRIPS,AND COMMUNITY EVENTS.
