Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To mobilize the caring power of detroit and southeastern michigan to improve communities and individual lives in measurable and lasting ways.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Uwsems special initiatives, in collaboration with community partners, focus on the building blocks for a quality life education, income and basic needs. Education: high school in 2012-2013, united way continued to implement an educational turnaround process throughout a network of 15 detroit area high schools representing 8781 students. Our goals are to ensure that at least 80% of students graduate from high school prepared for college and careers and to ensure that act scores increase half a point each year. In 2013, efforts focused on working collaboratively with the schools to identify and strengthen partnerships with local corporations and community service organizations in order to 1) provide students with individualized academic and social supports, and 2) introduce extended learning time to connect students with professionals who will introduce them to stem and other fields and guide students in identifying career paths, developing skills and obtaining work experience. Early childhood in 2013, united way's ongoing work to ensure that children in greater detroit are ready to learn reached 5,000 children through social innovation fund initiatives. We strengthened and expanded our early learning community network, which provides training and support to parents, family, friends and neighborhood caregivers, as well as licensed and unlicensed child care providers. To date, 20,857 individuals have joined the early learning community network, 3,950 have completed five child development classes, 1,619 have completed 10 or more classes, and 356 licensed childcare providers have completed self-assessment surveys to enter michigan's statewide quality rating and improvement system. Special initiative for education in 2013, united way expanded an early literacy initiative pilot to launch little steps, an early childhood initiative in collaboration with local hospitals to ensure children have the resources and support needed for good health, family stability and quality learning. Little steps has reached 1,113 families to date. Basic needs in 2012-2013, thanks to improved efficiencies in the emergency food system and expansion of federal child nutrition programs, united way was able to ensure that more than 310,000 individuals accessed enough food to survive and thrive. Highlights of united way efforts include: increasing the number of sites participating in the summer food service program to over 400 across southeast michigan, as well as securing over a dozen additional program sponsors; deploying food system navigators into local communities to increase access to free breakfast, after-school and summer meals; launching 8 mobile summer meal routes targeting new sites in parks and apartment complexes; rebranding statewide the summer meals program "meet u and eat up" which has been franchised, with the rights sold to the state of maryland; forming the detroit child nutrition coalition. Income in 2013, united way helped people move from crisis to self-sufficiency in meeting their basic needs by: . Supporting two neighborhood networks in detroit. One network was launched in 2012 in conjunction with focus:hope and operates in a 100-block area of northwest detroit. The other network was launched in 2013 in conjunction with don bosco hall and is serving the cody-rouge neighborhood of northwest detroit. The neighborhood network is an approach to fighting poverty through better coordination and stabilization efforts and has an overall goal of achieving economic security for residents. Using a total of 550,000 in united way grants, the networks are used to implement programs, using computer systems to coordinate data and onsite coordinators to help turn members of families in crisis into educated and productive citizens. . Advocating for clients and changing systems at the public policy level. . Supporting data-driven programs that bridge the gap between needs and resources. . Supporting new and innovative programming that will help individual
