“The parks & open space foundation strengthens the connections between the public and the boulder county parks & open space department by raising private funds, supporting innovative projects, fostering partnerships and increasing community involvement.”

“The boulder county parks & open space foundation is pleased to report the following accomplishments in 2021: financial support in the amount of 30,000 to the ocean first institute species conservation project for northern red belly dace, a fish native to the county's st. Vrain creek. First is working with parks & open space, st. Vrain valley school district, colorado parks & wildlife, university of colorado and other partners to increase the populations and habitats of this special status species in boulder county through hands-on and innovative involvement of local k-12 students. Financial support in the amount of 7,140 was provided to dr. Doreen martinez. Dr. Martinez is providing leadership and subject matter expertise to the department's indigenous ways & land commitment team as they endeavor to create an indigenous land commitment on behalf of the department. Along with the commitment, team members are initiating project work in support of the commitment and also providing recommendations for evolving operational aspects of the department that align with indigenous values for the land that the department has a responsibility to steward. Financial support in the amount of 15,000 to science, health & access to resources and education, inc (share) to support the continued development of the explorandos senderos program. Explorandos senderos is a grassroots, community-based program that seeks to support spanish-speaking families in experiencing local, public open spaces as a community in an informal, unprogrammed way. Financial support to elizabeth black in the amount of 500 to support a 10 -year citizen-science initiative that seeks to improve soil health on agricultural lands and other open space in boulder county. In addition, the foundation provided funding the department and departmental staff for materials and/or services for a variety of endeavors. Highlighted endeavors include: - 26,250 to continue the deployment of live cameras at trailheads - 11,400 to support the ranger-led lefthand outdoor challenge youth program, including an equipment trailer - 51,595 to support various recovery projects at the site of the calwood fire - 85,000 to the cultural resources program to support restoration of the wencel barn and a paleontological survey of carolyn holmberg preserve at rock creek farm and southeast grasslands - 15,000 to support specialized arbor care for a 100-year-old fruit tree orchard by specialized arborist on the zapf open space - 25,000 cash match for grant opportunities for the 104th street connector trail - 25,000 cash match for a colorado water conservation board grant to support the lower lower boulder creek restoration project - 36,000 for trail work at tolland ranch by near nederland by teens inc., a nederland-area youth corps - 32,692 for front range climbing stewards for work on the climbing access trails at castle rock in boulder canyon”
