Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Two board members are married.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The 990 is reviewed by the executive director and then the finance committee, which includes the treasurer and three other board members, prior to filing. The organization provides a complete copy of the 990 to each member of the board prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The process for determining the executive director's compensation includes conducting a comparable salary study to see what peer organizations of our size were paying. The search committee, comprised of select members of the board, proposed a range to the board prior to the search beginning. This range was then adjusted with board approval once we met with potential finalists for the position. A final compensation package was approved by the full board prior to making an offer to the successful candidate. The executive director does not have a written employment contract.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 18

A copy of the form 990 is maintained at the organization's office and is available upon request.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/Desc0PROGRAM AND ACADEMIC PROGRESS:IN 2013-2014, URBAN COMPASS IS PROUD TO HAVE ACHIEVED GREAT PROGRESS TOWARDS ITS MISSION AND GOALS. URBAN COMPASS HAD FULL ENROLLMENT OF K-5TH GRADE STUDENTS; HIGH PROGRAM ATTENDANCE AND RETENTION RATES; IMPROVED STUDENT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE; IMPROVED READING FLUENCY; IMPROVED GRADES IN CORE ACADEMIC AREAS; IMPROVED SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT; INCREASED VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION AND INCREASED PARENT ENGAGEMENT. 100% OF URBAN COMPASS STUDENTS HAVE MET GRADE-LEVEL ACHIEVEMENT AT THE END OF THE 2013 SCHOOL YEAR, MEETING THE STANDARDS TO SUCCESSFULLY ADVANCE TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL. URBAN COMPASS PRIDES ITSELF ON ITS COLLABORATION WITH OUR PARTNER SCHOOL 112TH ST. ELEMENTARY. OUR STAFF MAINTAINS A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH ITS PRINCIPAL AND TEACHERS IN ORDER TO HELP TAILOR OUR PROGRAM AND SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS. BASED ON TEACHER FEEDBACK, WE HAVE RECENTLY INCREASED OUR FOCUS ON READING. WITH MANY OF OUR STUDENTS NOT READING AT GRADE LEVEL AT THE START OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR, WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED WEEKLY READING ACTIVITIES FROM THE READING A-Z ONLINE PROGRAM. EACH WEEK, USUALLY ON OUR EXTENDED TUESDAY SESSIONS, STUDENTS FOCUS ON READING AND READING COMPREHENSION EXERCISES. SINCE NOVEMBER 2013, WE HAVE SEEN A 27% INCREASE IN FLUENCY WITH MORE STUDENTS SCORING AT GRADE LEVEL ON FLUENCY TESTS. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN A 15% INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS EARNING A 3 (PROFICIENT) OR 4 (ADVANCED PROFICIENT) IN READING ON THEIR LAST TWO REPORT CARDS. IN ADDITION, MATH GRADES OF 3 OR 4 HAVE ALSO IMPROVED AS WELL AS HOMEWORK COMPLETION GRADES, A CORE FOCUS AREA FOR OUR PROGRAM. URBAN COMPASS STUDENTS HAVE IMPROVED IN ALL LEARNING AREAS IN THEIR LAST TWO REPORT PERIODS. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF THESE GAINS FOR OUR STUDENTS AND HOPE TO CONTINUE THIS TREND.PROGRAM ATTENDANCE HAS ALSO IMPROVED FROM PRIOR YEARS HELPING STAFF TO WORK MORE CONSISTENTLY WITH STUDENTS IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THEIR ACADEMIC NEEDS. IN TURN, SCHOOL ATTENDANCE RATES FOR OUR STUDENTS ARE SOLID. URBAN COMPASS STUDENTS HAVE MET THE LAUSD DISTRICT-WIDE GOAL OF A 96% SCHOOL ATTENDANCE RATE. IN 2012, 112TH ST. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ONLY HAD 57% OF ITS STUDENTS ATTENDING AT 96%, WHILE LAUSD'S AVERAGE WAS 70% OF STUDENTS ATTENDING AT THIS RATE. BASED ON THE LAST TWO REPORTING PERIODS OF THE 2013-2014 ACADEMIC YEAR THUS FAR, URBAN COMPASS STUDENTS ARE SET TO EXCEED BOTH OF THESE GROUPS WITH OVER 85% OF OUR STUDENTS HITTING THE 96% SCHOOL ATTENDANCE TARGET!AS PART OF OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM, URBAN COMPASS CONTINUES TO BRING SITE-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS, INCLUDING STEM PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE MAD ABOUT SCIENCE PROGRAM, WHICH TEACHES SCIENCE CONCEPTS THROUGH HANDS-ON EXPERIMENTS AND ACTIVITIES. URBAN COMPASS ALSO CONTINUES TO TAKE STUDENTS ON MONTHLY FIELD TRIPS AND ACTIVITIES DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO HELP STUDENTS LEARN AND EXPERIENCE A WORLD OUTSIDE THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. STUDENTS HAVE BEEN TREATED TO THE MOVIES, LA ZOO, GRIFFITH PARK OBSERVATORY, SANTA MONICA PIER FOR THE OTIS COLLEGE KITE FESTIVAL, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY, AND THE KIDSPACE MUSEUM PUMPKIN FESTIVAL. STUDENTS ALSO COMMUNICATED VIA "PEN-PAL" LETTERS WITH THE RESIDENTS OF THE BELMONT VILLAGE SENIOR CENTER. THIS FUN, AND MUTUALLY-BENEFICIAL, PEN-PAL PROJECT WAS DESIGNED TO ALLOW OUR STUDENTS TO PRACTICE THEIR WRITING SKILLS IN A FUN, NEW WAY WHILE LEARNING ABOUT INDIVIDUALS WHO MAY HAVE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES FROM THEMSELVES. AS PART OF OUR SPORTS AND RECREATION PROGRAM, WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH THE FIRST TEE OF SOUTH LOS ANGELES, AN ORGANIZATION THAT PROMOTES CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND LIFE-ENHANCING VALUES THROUGH THE GAME OF GOLF. THERE IS ALSO A NEW, FOCUSED EFFORT TOWARD FAMILY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS SO THAT PARENTS/GUARDIANS CAN ACCESS TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILD'S ACADEMIC CAREER. THIS YEAR, URBAN COMPASS PARTNERED WITH PARENT COLLEGE, AN EDUCATIONAL EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM FOR PARENTS TO LEARN VARIOUS WAYS TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILD'S EDUCATION. AS PART OF THIS PROGRAM, PARENTS ATTEND MONTHLY SESSIONS
