Profile

Our mission is to protect, inspire, nurture, educate, train, and challenge disadvantaged vulnerable Honduran children. We mentor and provide opportunities to help them reach their full potential and become self-sufficient, caring, responsible adults. Extreme poverty, lack of opportunity, drugs and gang violence contribute to a catastrophic struggle for human survival in Honduras. Most at risk are rural youth who migrate to the cities in search of opportunity where they are confronted with hunger, unemployment, disease, drug cartels, and brutal gangs specializing in trafficking, killings, kidnappings, rape and extortion. A United Nations Global Study advocates strong investment in education and employability for vulnerable children, youth, orphans, and those without access to public services. These are the children the Hope for Honduran Children Foundation works to serve, educate, and provide opportunities.

Mission and Program Overview

Mission

A recent United Nations Global Study advocates strong investment in education and employability for vulnerable children, youth, orphans, and those without access to public services. These are the children the Hope for Honduran Children Foundation works to serve, educate, and provide opportunities.

IRS990/Desc0EDUCATION AND SPONSORSHIP The United Nations reports that Honduras has the worst educational system in Central America and 51% of Honduran children receive no education after sixth grade. Extreme poverty and lack of education are very pressing problems that are prevalent for 75% of the population living in the mountain villages. In the rural communities most adults are unemployed and 2 in 10 are illiterate. Without the benefit of a good education, the population we serve has no possible escape from their cycle of deplorable poverty. In 2024 H4HC provided scholarships for 14 university scholars plus 4 high school students in our 2 residential homes. Additional support was provided to three students not living in our residences. Our long-term residential program requires exemplary character and academic focus while students are provided safe shelter, food, a quality education, clothing, medical care and abundant love. It is a family environment with rigorous expectations. The students quickly learn the benefits of integrity, self-discipline and honor and are supported through their studies at the university. H4HC students are thriving and graduates quickly find excellent employment.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Our mission is to protect, inspire, nurture, educate, train, and challenge disadvantaged vulnerable Honduran children.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE HUMANITARIAN SERVICE PROGRAM & CULTURAL EXCHANGE TRIPS - There is no better classroom than the world itself and no more impactful lesson than immersion into the vibrant and loving, yet impoverished Honduran culture. Immersion trips are an integral part of the foundation's success with each trip designed to make a sustainable difference in the lives of the Honduran children, their families, the local communities, and the lives of our service volunteers. In 2024 there were two week-long trips (February and June). The trips offer a myriad of opportunities such as: 1) to engage in meaningful interaction with children & local villagers 2) to immerse yourself in a diverse and meaningful cultural experience 3) to enhance your global awareness 4) to bring much needed supplies to isolated villages 5) to change the world of a child in desperate need 6) to establish impactful relationships with our residential students.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SPECIAL PROJECTS - are those for which Hope for Honduran Children raises special funding to offset the costs of planning, implementation and continuation. Our Feed A Village program is extremely impactful. In 2024, the program helped to support several isolated and impoverished communities providing them with educational assistance, food, shoes, clothing, vitamins, medical and educational supplies. Scholarships were awarded to three university students, one student to medical school, one student to nursing school, and four students to high school. H4HC also brought support to the local Center for the Blind and internet connection to the local Santa Lucia high school. H4HC makes a meaningful and sustainable difference in the lives of rural Honduran Children as the foundation firmly believes that "A child without education is like a bird without wings."
