“Highlights of del sol's 2020 pre-covid live performances included: 1) a showcase for chamber music america's annual conference in nyc; 2) a program for asian musical voices of america in nyc; 3) the "beyond 2020 microtonal music festival," co-presented by the university of pittsburgh and the andy warhol museum in pittsburgh, pa; 4) a debut concert featuring music by ben johnston at constellation in chicago; and 5) a local concert at mills college in oakland, ca and a performance celebrating anthony braxton's 75th birthday at the berkeley art museum and pacific film archive. In march, del sol quickly adapted to pandemic stay-at-home orders, at first with solo performances by each quartet member streamed from their homes, and through online collaborations with other artists and organizations, including for the library of congress's "boccaccio project." after the pandemic rules eased in fall 2020, quartet members resumed playing together (masked and socially distanced), performing 19 digital concerts, self- presented on social media platforms or streamed from local venues. In november, to provide solace for the community, del sol performed the us premiere of "a dust in time," an hourlong string quartet meditation written during the pandemic by chinese american composer huang ruo, streamed from inside san francisco's grace cathedral. In fall 2020 the quartet also began its joy project, performing new, short pieces, written for del sol during the pandemic, at 19 outdoor concerts in bay area parks and neighborhoods, where audiences could listen safely while socially distanced.”

“In 2020, significant educational outreach activities included: 1) continuing a pre-pandemic collaborative, arts and music program for 4th graders at a san francisco public school, exploring immigration, family history and cultural diversity in connection with our angel island project, modified to an online format after covid-19 closed schools; 2) collaborating with composer gabriela lena frank in rural boonville, ca, mentoring local public school students in chamber music composition and working with six emerging composer fellows from the gabriela lena frank creative academy of music, premiering their new works online in june; 3) providing a pre-pandemic "chamberfest" coaching workshop for 21 adult nonprofessional musicians; 4) after the covid shutdown, providing two sessions of an innovative digital workshop, "composing in place," with 18 participants; and 5) collaborating online with the first four participants in the del sol composer incubator, a free, 6-month mentoring program for early career composers.”
