Activity 2

Healthy Lifestyles & Community Help-ANDA continued to encourage healthy lifestyles in 2012 by helping to bring a grocery store back to this food desert. Our executive director found a company willing to consider opening a grocery store in Argentine. In support of this endeavor over $300,000 in donations has been pledged towards the construction of the grocery store. An agreement was made and the property to be the location of the Sav A Lot grocery store was determined in 2012. The property was purchased by the Argentine Betterment Corporation with some of the funding that ANDA has raised. By December 2012 the development plans were in the final stages. The community was also assisted in a variety of ways in the Community Help Program. During 2012 transportation was provided Argentine residents for doctors appointments and to Area Agency on Aging. Many elderly residents were informed and assisted in applying for the utility tax rebate. Many residents were informed about the H&R Block free second look on previous years taxes. They were assisted in this process. Residents were informed of the ECKAN Weatherization program, assisted with the application process and, as a result, many received assistance. Families received furnaces, refrigerator, weather stripping and insulation, a total of 14 double pane windows, a triple pane window, a sliding glass door, a water heater, concrete steps, guttering, caulking, the new energy efficient light bulbs for the entire house and the repair of a light switch.

Activity 3

Summer Youth Program-The 2012 summer youth program, Argentines Ambassadors, was funded by the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, the Forest Foundation, and R A Long Foundation. It is designed to provide creative and educational activities that increase self-confidence and resilience in underserved, teenage youth. A total of 18 youths from Argentine were Ambassadors of the Argentine Community. Through art, photography, writing, and documentary development they explored their community. In addition, they participated in community service, had guest speakers on Argentines history, were exposed to present-day community programs, and came together for empowering team building exercises. They earned a stipend while they learned life skills. The Ambassadors partnered with Maddie Rhodes to develop three health service commercials on teenage depression and bullying for younger students of Argentine Middle School. They developed a booklet of powerful journal entries that is used in sociology classes in the metropolitan area. All of the ambassadors learned how to release or start to address pent up anger/fears/or detrimental life experiences through writing. From these writings, three of the ambassadors were offered outside psychiatric services free of charge.
