Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Beam aims to open up opportunity for all students at the highest level of achievement, to instill a genuine love for mathematics, and to open up opportunities for fulfilling, well-paid careers. To our knowledge, beam is the only program in the us providing long-term (10-year), comprehensive support to ensure success in advanced math for kids from low-income and low-access backgrounds. Our goals are to provide academic preparation for advanced mathematical work; social/emotional support so students are comfortable and confident with stem identities and engaging stem communities; a community of like-minded peers including students, counselors, and faculty in whom our students can see themselves represented; and guidance and mentoring to support students in seeking out future stem opportunities.

To train the intellectual leaders of the next generation (see 990, part iii).

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Form 990 and schedules are reviewed by the entire board and executive director of the organization prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All members of the board of directors and officers are required to disclose any conflicts of interest by completing an annual questionnaire. If a conflict of interest is deemed to exist, it is the duty of the individual to disclose such interest. This interest is to be recorded in the minutes of the meeting of the board and where the conflict concerns any board member, the individual(s) shall not participate in any vote or deliberation on the matter. Periodic reviews are conducted to ensure that the organization is operating in a manner consistent with its charitable purposes and does not engage in activities that could jeopardize its tax-exempt status.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Compensation for the executive director and officers is determined by the board of directors using comparable data from peer organizations' 990 forms. The board of directors may, from time to time, utilize independent, third-party advisors, consultants, and counsel to conduct periodic compensation studies, which encompass comparable, relevant market data for the organization's positions obtained from published surveys and other available sources. Other surveys of specialized skill set or employee attributes critical to the success of the organization will also be incorporated as needed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organizations governing documents, policies and financial statements are available upon request by any interested party.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 1 - Mission

Beam 990 mission statement: bridge to enter advanced mathematics (beam) creates pathways for students from low-income and historically marginalized communities to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists. Beam aims to change the dramatic underrepresentation of these students at the highest level of achievement, to instill a genuine love for mathematics, and to open up opportunities for fulfilling, well-paid careers. To our knowledge, beam is the only program in the us providing long-term (10-year), comprehensive support to ensure success in advanced math for kids from historically marginalized communities.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization did not change either its oversight process of the audit, review, or compilation of its financial statements or selection process for an independent accountant during the tax year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Income related to these purposes is exempt from federal and state income taxes under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Unrelated business income would be taxable according to applicable internal revenue code sections. The organization regularly reviews and evaluates its tax positions taken in its filed returns and recognizes the benefit from a tax position only if it is more likely than not that the position would be sustained upon audit based solely on the technical merits of the tax position. The organization accrues interest and penalties on uncertain tax positions as a component of the provision for income taxes. The organization files federal, california and new york tax returns. The statute of limitations for these jurisdictions is generally three years. The organization had no returns under examination as of may 31, 2022.

IRS990/Desc0THE ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING INITIATIVE, INC. (THE ORGANIZATION), FORMERLY KNOWN AS "THE ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING FOUNDATION" WAS FORMED IN 2004. FROM 2004 THROUGH 2011, AOPSI WAS A SMALL, ALL-VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION; WE RAN A NATIONAL MATH CONTEST AND SUPPORTED LOCAL UNIVERSITY-RUN MATH CIRCLES. BRIDGE TO ENTER ADVANCED MATHEMATICS (BEAM) WAS FOUNDED IN 2011 BY DANIEL ZAHAROPOL AND RAPIDLY BECAME AOPSI'S MAIN PRIORITY AS THE PROGRAM STARTED TO FIND REAL SUCCESS. BEAM WAS FOUNDED TO ADDRESS A LARGELY UNRECOGNIZED PROBLEM: WHILE AFFLUENT STUDENTS WITH TALENT IN MATH HAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO RECEIVE INSTRUCTION IN DEEP ENRICHMENT MATHEMATICS, EVEN HIGH-ACHIEVING STUDENTS FROM MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES TYPICALLY RECEIVE ONLY ROTE INSTRUCTION FOCUSED ON BASIC SKILLS. TOO FREQUENTLY, THEIR POTENTIAL GOES UNRECOGNIZED OR UNSUPPORTED. BEAM WAS LAUNCHED AS A SMALL 3-WEEK RESIDENTIAL SUMMER PROGRAM FOR 17 RISING 8TH GRADERS IN NEW YORK CITY. AS BEAM'S SUMMER PROGRAMS GREW, IN 2013, BEAM ALSO BEGAN TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AND RESOURCES TO STUDENTS DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR, INCLUDING WEEKEND CLASSES AND DROP-IN OFFICE HOURS. IN 2018, BEAM EXPANDED TO LOS ANGELES AND CONTINUED TO GROW IN NYC. BEAM HAS NOW GROWN FROM RUNNING A SINGLE THREE-WEEK RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM FOR 17 RISING 8TH GRADERS TO RUNNING SIX SUMMER SITES SERVING ABOUT 420 STUDENTS EACH SUMMER AND PROVIDING YEAR-ROUND SUPPORT AND PROGRAMMING FOR 650 STUDENTS IN NEW YORK AND LOS ANGELES. THE ORGANIZATION FOCUSES ITS EFFORTS ON FOUR MAIN PROGRAMS: BRIDGE TO ENTER ADVANCED MATHEMATICS ("BEAM") DISCOVERY AND SUMMER AWAY, THE BEAM PATHWAY PROGRAM, AND ENTRY POINTS, A NEW NATIONAL INITIATIVE DESIGNED TO BRING BEAM PROGRAMS TO ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. IN 2020 WE LAUNCHED OUR FIRST NATIONAL PROGRAM TO REACH UNDERSERVED STUDENTS ACROSS THE US. WHEN FULLY ROLLED OUT, THE PROGRAM AIMS TO SUPPORT MORE THAN 10,000 STUDENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY BEGINNING IN 2ND GRADE AND CONTINUING THROUGH COLLEGE GRADUATION. MORE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT WWW.BEAMMATH.ORG OR WILL BE PROVIDED UPON REQUEST.
