IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0HIGH SCHOOL TUITION AND DEVELOPMENT - THE HIGH SCHOOL TUITION AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS WERE ESTABLISHED TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION FOR STUDENT FROM THE ISINYA, AMBOSELI, AND MASAI MARA REGIONS OF KENYA, BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL SUPPLIES, TEACHING MATERIALS, LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT, AND TEACHER TRAINING.A CENTRAL THEME OF THIS PROGRAM AND THE ORGANIZATION IS TO FACILITATE AND SUPPORT A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY BY THE GIRLS WHO HAVE BENEFITTED FROM THE PROGRAM TO GIVE BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND THE ORGANIZATION. TO THIS END, THE ORGANIZATION SPONSORS THEIR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES TO WORK AS TEACHER INTERNS IN THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY SCHOOL. DUE TO CHANGES IN REGULATIONS OF THE EXISTING PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN KENYA, THE ORGANIZATION DECIDED TO EXPAND THIS PROGRAM BY BUILDING ITS OWN HIGH SCHOOL IN KENYA. THE FIRST PHASE OF THE TEMBEA SECONDARY SCHOOL ("TEMBEA") WAS COMPLETED IN DECEMBER 2012 AND OPENED FOR OPERATIONS IN JANUARY 2013. CURRENTLY, THE HIGH SCHOOL CONSISTS OF FOUR CLASSROOMS, THREE DORMITORIES, INTERN HOUSING, A LIBRARY AND A KITCHEN FACILITY. ALSO, IT HAS TWO GREENHOUSES WHICH ALLOW THE HIGH SCHOOL TO BE VASTLY SELF-SUFFICIENT IN PROVIDING ITS OWN FOOD SOURCES.IN 2016, A 12TH GRADE WAS ADDED AND THE HIGH SCHOOL HAD ITS FIRST HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION (23 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES). ADDITIONAL FACILITIES CONTINUE TO BE ADDED EACH YEAR. THE NEW SCHOOL PROVIDES A TYPE OF QUALITY EDUCATION THAT IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE VAST MAJORITY OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN KENYA. TEMBEA EMPHASIZES CREATIVE AND CRITICAL THINKING, READING AND WRITING PROGRAMS, ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP, VALUE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE, APPRECIATION OF ALL CULTURES AND DEVELOPMENT OF LEADERSHIP ATTRIBUTES. ALSO, APPROXIMATELY TWENTY HIGH-SCHOOL GRADUATES ARE CURRENTLY INTERNING AS TEACHERS FOR A SMALL GROUP OF NURSERY SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS. IN 2017, 95 GIRLS WERE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT TEMBEA.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0EDUCATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMS - THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES WORKSHOPS AND OTHER PROGRAMS FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS AND THEIR COMMUNITIES. THESE WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS CAN VARY FROM YEAR TO YEAR AND HAVE INCLUDED SUCH TOPICS AS HIV/AIDS PREVENTION, FEMALE CIRCUMCISION, TEACHER TRAINING, AND TOWN CLEAN-UP INITIATIVES.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/ExpenseAmt011202
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0FAMINE RELIEF - THE ORGANIZATION OPERATES THIS PROGRAM INTERMITTENTLY, ON AN AS-NEEDED BASIS. THE PROGRAM INVOLVES RAISING FUNDS TO DELIVER FOOD SUPPLIES DIRECTLY TO THE FAMILIES OF SPONSORED GIRLS AND OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY WHO ARE AFFECTED BY DROUGHTS AND RESULTING FAMINES. THERE HAVE BEEN TWO DEVASTATING DROUGHTS IN KENYA IN THE LAST DECADE WHICH LED TO CROPS NOT GROWING, LIVESTOCK STARVING, AND FARMERS AND HERDERS HAVING NO SOURCE OF INCOME TO BUY FOOD TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES. THE EFFECTS OF ONE SEASON OF DROUGHT CAN BE FELT FOR AS MANY AS FIVE YEARS AS THE HERDS ARE REBUILT. IN ADDITION TO DISTRIBUTING FOOD, THE ORGANIZATION TEACHES ALTERNATIVE FOOD-SOURCING TECHNIQUES SO THAT THE COMMUNITIES WILL BE BETTER PREPARED FOR THE NEXT POSSIBLE DROUGHT.
