“Founded in 2003, Words Without Borders (WWB) cultivates global awareness by expanding access to international writing in English translation. We aim to dramatically increase the number of readers who have meaningful experiences with literature in translation and to provide a platform to the worlds literary voices. Our programs include a free digital magazine for international literature, an education program that provides curricular resources and training for educators, an annual events series, and service to the field of literary translation through grants, fellowships, and digital promotion. Key Activities: Our digital magazine offers unparalleled access to the worlds literary voices. These include writers like Elena Ferrante, Olga Tokarczuk, and Han Kang, all published on WWB before they achieved international recognition, as well as hundreds of new and rising talents. We are committed to centering writers in indigenous, endangered, and other world languages that are too often marginalized. To date, we have published over 4,600 authors and translators from 143 countries translated from 140 languages. Our digital magazine reaches over 700,000 readers each year. Our education program WWB Campus, brings global literature into hundreds of classrooms, offering free access to stories from around the world; multimedia curricular resources; and professional support and training for educators. Each year, WWB organizes free virtual and in-person events with international authors, translators, and critics, providing a space for readers to engage directly with the perspectives we publish. WWB is an anchor organization for the field of international literature, offering our peers visibility through our website, events, and social media channels. We have invested in emerging publishing professionals through our paid fellowship program, established in 2017; our Momentum Grant for Early-Career Translators, which gives a $3,000 grant plus expert guidance to an emerging literary translator; and a commitment to equitable compensation for our contributors. The Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature honors an individual who has dedicated their career to championing literature in translation.”
