The mission is to educate the public and inspire an inventive spirit by interpreting and preserving the innovations, legacies, artifacts, gardens, homes, laboratory, and other structures of thomas edison and henry ford, emphasizing florida history, science, horticulture, and the arts.

The mission of the edison & ford winter estates is to provide unique educational experiences based on the artifacts, legacy and lives of thomas edison & henry ford with emphasis on their florida history. The purpose is to inspire the public to learn from these experiences. As such, the mission includes the preservation and interpretation of their homes, gardens, laboratory and related objects and artifacts.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The mission of the edison & ford winter estates is to provide unique educational experiences based on the artifacts, legacy and lives of thomas edison & henry ford with emphasis on their florida history. The purpose is to inspire the public to learn from these experiences. As such, the mission includes the preservation and interpretation of their homes, gardens, laboratory and related objects and artifacts.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Volunteers assist as tour guides, at the information booth, as docents, as office help and in visitor services. Volunteer hours were approximately 28,000 hours and valued at approximately 660,000 which is not reflected in the financial statements nor on the 990.

Research and other program experiences for the general public, school and special groups. The annual visitation is approximately 250,000. All revenues are directed to the preservation, conservation and interpretation activities of the organization. There are approximately 60 paid professional staff and 250 volunteers who help carry out the educational and conservation activities of the organization. In 2014 the edison botanic research laboratory was designated as a national historic chemical landmark by the american chemical society.

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The internal revenue service has determined that the organization is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)3 of the internal revenue code. The organization is a not-for-profit florida corporation and therefore is not subject to state income tax taxes. The internal revenue code provides for taxation of unrelated business income under certain circumstances. The organization reports no unrelated business taxable income, however, such status is subject to final determination upon examination of the related tax returns by the appropriate taxing authorities. The organization's tax filings are subject to audit by various taxing authorities. Certain income tax returns filed by the organization remain open to examination by these government agencies. The financial accounting standards board has issued guidance on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes and the organization adopted this guidance. The organization has evaluated its tax positions and any estimates utilized in its tax returns, and concluded that the organization has taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustments to the financial statements to comply with the provisions of this guidance.

THE SITE IS ALSO A FLORIDA HISTORIC LANDMARK, AN ORIGINAL SAVE AMERICA'S TREASURES AND A RESTORE AMERICA PROJECT OF THE NATIONAL TRUST. THE PROPERTY IS OPEN DAILY YEAR-ROUND FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING TOURS, LECTURES, CLASSES, RESEARCH AND OTHER PROGRAM EXPERIENCES FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC, SCHOOL AND SPECIAL GROUPS.
