Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Design and programming, academy of whole learning is a place where active minds are challenged. We use a blended learning approach to allow us to personalize each student's learning path. Blended learning allows the teachers to customize instruction and assessment while giving the student control over time, place, path and pace. Along with using a blended learning approach, we use vertical integration (multi-ages grouped by learning and social level), allowing students to move at a flexible pace using various learning pathways to mastery. Students experience success because they are taught at their instructional level to ensure mastery before introducing new concepts. Our faculty and staff believe that all students have learning potential, which the school must identify, stimulate, and nurture. All children want to learn and do well. Our responsibility as educators is to discover how to motivate each student. We develop a plan that fosters curiosity and a love of learning. We use a variety of testing procedures in order to evaluate progress and guide instruction. We use the following: diagnostic: given at the beginning of the school year, or the beginning of a new unit of study, a diagnostic test attempts to quantify what students already know about a topic. Formative: given throughout the learning process, formative assessments seek to determine how students are progressing through a certain learning goal. Summative: given at the end of the year or unit, summative assessments assess a student's mastery of a topic after instruction. Norm-referenced tests: these tests measure students against a national "norm- or average in order to rank students against each other. The nwea map test is our standardized test that is norm-referenced. Criterion-referenced tests: these tests measure student performance against a standard or specific goal. Unit and chapter tests as usually criterion- referenced, as are the newly developed common core state standards tests. Testing data helps us determine a student's areas of strengths and challenge, allowing us to make the best possible decisions for each individual student. At the completion of the 2015-16 school year, 38 students were enrolled.
