Our mission is to assure services are truly customer-focused, providing coordinated, life-changing human services to individuals and families; and improve neighborhoods to be safe and thriving with a desirable quality of life.

Our mission is to help residents access critical human services and help each attain personal growth, leading to sustainable self-sufficiency; to assist community development for safe, secure and vibrant neighborhoods. Our exempt purpose achievements for our three largest programs by total expenses incurred are youth development, family services and parkway-community services.

Board member arthur maurer is the father of board member peter maurer. Neither board member has any direct or indirect business relationship with charles settlement house.

The board treasurer of the organization receives a copy of the financial statement, tax return, depreciation schedules and any reconciliation schedules for expense allocation by the auditors. All figures on the tax returns are traced back to the supporting documentation. Prior year balance sheet figures are compared to the previous year tax return. Questions, statements and board member list are reviewed for accuracy. Any questions or inconsistencies are discussed with the auditors prior to filing the return.

PART X, LINE 2:

Charles settlement house, inc. Is organized as a nonprofit corporation, and is exempt from federal and state income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and applicable state regulations. The organization has filed for and received income tax exemptions in the various jurisdictions where they are required to do so. The organization files form 990 tax returns in the u.s. Federal jurisdiction and in new york state. With few exceptions, as of march 31, 2018, the organization is no longer subject to u.s. Federal or state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years ended prior to march 31, 2015. The tax returns for years ended march 31, 2015 through march 31, 2018 are still subject to potential audit by the irs and taxing authorities in new york state. Management of the organization believes they have no material uncertain tax positions and, accordingly, they have not recognized any liability for unrecognized tax benefits.

THE PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH OF OUR YOUTH PROGRAMS IS BASED UPON THE "40 DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS." INCREASING SOCIAL SKILLS, JOB READINESS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT SKILLS, SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, GRADUATION RATES AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ARE AREAS OF FOCUS. OUR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM RELOCATED TO OUR COMMUNITY CENTER AT 71 PARKWAY, BECOMING A NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED PROGRAM. WE SERVED 71 CHILDREN IN 1ST THROUGH 6TH GRADE. THE PROGRAM IS OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE TO FAMILIES. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: LITERACY, HOMEWORK HELP, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & SPORTS, S.T.E.M., DANCE, PHOTOGRAPHY, HEALTHY COOKING, NEWSLETTER, MUSIC AND ARTS AND CRAFTS. A COMPANION SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM WAS PROVIDED FOR SIX WEEKS IN JULY AND AUGUST AND SERVED 68 CHILDREN.WE SERVED 30 TEENS THROUGH THE REINVESTING IN YOUTH (RIY) PROGRAM. YOUTH IN THE RIY PROGRAM HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED THROUGH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. RIY YOUTH HAVE NOT BEEN IN DETENTION FACILITIES AND OUR PROGRAM'S GOAL IS TO KEEP THEM FROM BEING PLACED IN DETENTION. THE COMMUNITY ASSET NAVIGATOR WORKS WITH THE YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES TO IDENTIFY APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES AND HELP THE YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES NAVIGATE THE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO THEM. WE ALSO RUN THE EPIC TEEN CLUB AS A PLACE FOR THE YOUTH IN RIY, AS WELL AS OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD TEENS, TO MEET FOR SUPPORT, MENTORING, SKILL-BUILDING, AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES.

SPACE IS ALSO USED BY STADIUM ESTATES, ASSOCIATES FOR TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT, ROCHESTER NORTHWEST ROTARY CLUB, THE EMERGENCY SERVICES & FAMILY STABILIZATION NETWORK, AND OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS. CSH HAS TWO BUILDINGS AT 431 & 445 JAY STREET, ROCHESTER. 431 JAY IS THE SITE OF A PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM OPERATED IN COLLABORATION WITH BADEN STREET SETTLEMENT. 445 JAY IS USED AS PART OF OUR STADIUM ESTATES HOUSING PROJECT AND AS A JOB TRAINING SITE FOR THE GREENVISIONS PROGRAM.

THE CENTER ALSO EXPANDED THEIR SERVICES TO INCLUDE DDE POPULATION BEING SERVED BY ARC. THESE SENIORS HAVE RETIRED FROM THE SHELTERED WORKSHOPS AND ARE NOW PART OF OUR DAILY PROGRAM. THE CENTER PROVIDES A GROWING NUMBER OF SERVICES THAT KEEP SENIORS ACTIVE AND ON THE MOVE. AN EMPHASIS ON MAINTAINING PHYSICAL HEALTH LED THE CENTER TO OFFER EXERCISE PROGRAMS, A WALKING CLUB, EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS ABOUT NUTRITION AND HEALTH, AND A FALLS PREVENTION PROGRAM. IN 2017 WE BROKE GROUND ON PHASE II OF THE STADIUM ESTATES AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT. CHARLES SETTLEMENT HOUSE PARTNERS WITH ROCHESTER'S CORNERSTONE GROUP TO BUILD 46 SINGLE FAMILY HOMES. IN 2016 WE COMPLETED PHASE I WITH 45 UNITS.THESE HOMES PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR LOW INCOME WORKING FAMILIES AND FAMILIES WITH ONE OR MORE DISABLED MEMBERS. PHASE II WILL BE COMPLETED IN THE SPRING OF 2019. CHARLES SETTLEMENT HOUSE ALSO PARTNERED WITH BADEN STREET SETTLEMENT TO BRING ADDITIONAL EARLY PRE-KINDERGARTEN SLOTS INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS PROGRAM FOR 3 YEAR OLDS IS BASED AT OUR ACTIVITY CENTER AT 431 JAY STREET. CHARLES HOUSE NEIGHBORS IN ACTION IS A COMMUNITY GROUP SUPPORTED BY US, BRINGING TOGETHER RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES, CHURCHES, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS. THE COMMUNITY DEPARTMENT ALSO PROVIDES MEETING SPACE, SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY EVENTS, NEIGHBORHOOD BEAUTIFICATION, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT.
