Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the museum's inception, are not recognized as assets in the statements of financial position. Purchases of, or proceeds from the sale of, collection items are recorded as changes in net assets without donor restriction in the year the transaction occurs. The museum's policy requires that proceeds from the sale of objects from collection items must be used to acquire other objects for the collection; in no case may such proceeds be used for general operating costs. Donations of collection items and library materials are not recorded as income in the statements of activities and change in net assets.

PART III, LINE 4:

The corning museum of glass is home to the world's most comprehensive and celebrated collection of glass. The more than 48,000 objects in the museum's collection tell the story of glassmaking from its origins in mesopotamia in the mid-second millennium b.c. To works made currently. The collection is divided into four major curatorial areas: ancient, early modern, modern, and post war and contemporary. The galleries explore near eastern, asian, european and american glass and glassmaking from antiquity through present day. The museum also displays and interprets a collection of objects related to science and technology that are on view in the innovation center, which offers an interactive look at the way new discoveries in glass have changed the world. The juliette k. And leonard s. Rakow research library of the corning museum of glass is the world's foremost library on the art and history of glass and glassmaking. Its assets include books, trade catalogs, microfilms, videos, auction catalogs, prints and drawings, photographs, sound recordings, patents, slides, and virtual books. The collections and library are maintained for public exhibition, education, and research in furtherance of engaging the public in glass and glassmaking.
