Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Accrediting psychoanalytic education institutions.

To accredit psychoanalytic institutes in keeping with Standards of Psychoanalytic Education that are periodically reviewed and updated. The board reviews applications for accreditation, advises institutes and programs of the Standards for Psychoanalytic Education, conducts site visits to review all aspects of the program in keeping with the standards.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
General Program - The primary activity of the board is to assist in the accreditation of institutes by reviewing applications, mentoring newly applying institutes as they prepare their Self Study, provide corrective feedback before the site visit and finally conducting a site visit. In other words, there are multiple levels of intervention and assistance to help institutes successfully apply for accreditation. A crucial aspect of our work is continually reaching out to institute directors and others to help them understand the value and importance of seeking accreditation and in particular educating them concenrning the core Standards for Psychoanalytic Education, which constitutes a flexible model for institues to be able to adapt to their unique philosphy. To that end, we regularly schedule meetings during major psychoanalytic meetings to interest psychoanalysts in the goal and purpose of ACPEinc. We participate in the annual Psychoanalytic Fair to further inform the public of our work. While accreditation is our primary mission, our central document, the Standards for Psychoanalytic Education, is our primary vehicle for promoting the idea that diverse psychoanalytic traditions can work with common standards to evenually be able to present a clearer idea of psychoanalytic treatment and training to the general public and policy makers. Ultimately, we plan to seek recognition from the Education Department as an accrediting body that will clearly establish psychoanalysis as an advanced specialty of the mental health disciplines.$0$15,145
Site Visits-The ACPEinc assess how well each program implements the Standards of Psychoanalytic Education in light of its distinctive theory and training tradition. The ACPE accredited programs exemplify the numerous and diverse ways it is possible to articulate a uniform set of core standards. The accreditation process is comprised of multiple steps including self-study, review, site visit team, the site visit, and evaluation and action.$0$12,422
