Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Conservation/education

Battenkill Conservancy's mission is to preserve & enhance the Battenkill watershed through education, conservation, advocacy & the River Watch Program. Our goals include conserving land within the watershed to ensure clean water for all, supporting sustainable fishery, biodiversity, outdoor education and multi-use recreation by protecting and restoring aquatic and terrestrial habitats while ensuring the public access to one of the areas most important environmental, recreational, historic, cultural and economic assets of the region.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Advocacy: BkCs advocacy work during 2024 continued with our family friendly, free events geared to educating and engaging the public in watershed focused experiences. These included our annual Battenkill Runs Through It River Festival , trout stocking days in collaboration with NYS DEC, End of the Summer Picky Bug tables with the Greenwich Library & Summer Solstice Full Moon Bonfire with local land owners. BkC also partnered with the Friends of the Battenville Bridge to assist in the conservation of this historic bridge that crosses the Battenkill.-$3,909
Education: BkC's Discover Your Battenkill for Middle School Program hosted 11 young woman for 3 days of environmental education and team building at our Schmidt Meadow Preserve. The Program introduced students to the watershed, taught water safety skills, hiking basics and environmental lessons on site and at locations throughout the watershed. Our Annual Meeting and Speaker Series brought to the public, William Throops Flourishing in the Age of Climate Change for a presentation and interactive discussion.-$1,350
Conservation: BkC three fee owned properties (the Preserves) are located within the New York section of the watershed. All three provide public access, riparian protection, wildlife habitat protection, flood resiliency and have a direct positive impact on water quality. BkC also holds a conservation easement on a 50 acre riverfront property in the town of Jackson. BkC also partnered with the Washington County Sportsman Federation to present exhibits at the Washington County Fairgrounds during the County Fair. The improved visibility of our table ensured the exhibit was seen by thousands of attendees going through the DECs building.-$225
2024 Capacity Building: In 2024, a change in the long time leadership at the staffing and board level took place and required BkC to reduce its activities as it rebuilds its ongoing capacity and leadership. Board and volunteer recruitment are ongoing.--
