“The organization's permanently restricted funds consist of four individual donor-restricted funds. The bacharach service award is named for professor jere l. Bacharach. This award recognizes the contributions of individuals through their outstanding service to mesa or the academic profession. Service is defined broadly to include work in diverse areas including, but not limited to, outreach, librarianship, and film. Each year the mesa board of directors selects the winner who receives a cash award of $1,000. The kerr dissertation award honors the significant contribution of malcolm h. Kerr to middle east studies. Two awards were established in 1982 to recognize exceptional achievement in research and writing for/of dissertations in middle east studies. A $1,000 cash award is given yearly to the winner in each category of social sciences and humanities. The hourani book award honors albert hourani for his long and distinguished career as teacher and mentor. The award was established in 1991 to recognize outstanding publishing in middle east studies. Each year the winner of this award receives $1,000 (in the case of shared award, each recipient receives $500). The mentoring award was established in 1995 to recognize exceptional contributions that retired faculty have made to the education and training of others. Each year the mesa board of directors selects the winner who receives an award certificate.”

“Financial statements fin 48 (asc 740) footnote: the organization is exempt from income taxes under both federal (internal revenue code section 501(c)(3)) and arizona income tax laws, and is classified as other than a private organization. Accordingly, no provision for federal and state income taxes is made. Income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purpose, however, may be subject to taxation as unrelated business taxable income (ubti). Gaap requires management to perform an evaluation of all tax positions taken or expected to be taken in the course of preparing the organization's tax returns to determine whether the tax positions meet a "more likely than not" standard of being sustained under examination by the applicable taxing authorities. This evaluation is required to be performed for all open tax years, as defined by the various statutes of limitations, for federal and state purposes. The organization is only subject to income taxes on ubti as applicable. As a result, the organization is required to file informational returns for federal and state purposes and, if it has ubti, federal and state income tax returns. With limited exceptions, the organization is no longer subject to tax examination for any years earlier than 2011 for federal and 2010 for state. Management has performed its evaluation of tax positions taken on all open tax returns and has determined that there were no positions taken that do not meet the "more likely than not" standard.”
