Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The executive director, finance director, and treasurer review and compare the 990 to the financial statements before the return is signed and electronically filed with the irs. The return is also reviewed by the conservatory's finance committee and the board of trustees prior to its filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Review of conflict of interest policy - a) each trustee, officer, employee and volunteer shall be provided with and asked to review a copy of this policy and to acknowledge in writing that he or she has done so. B) annually each trustee, officer, employee and volunteer shall complete a disclosure form identifying any relationships, positions or circumstances in which he or she is involved that he or she believes could contribute to a conflict of interest. Such relationships, positions or circumstances might include service as a trustee of or consultant to another nonprofit organization, or ownership of a business that might provide goods or services to mcw. Any such information regarding the business interests of a trustee, officer, employee or volunteer, or a family member thereof, shall be treated as confidential and shall generally be made available only to the executive director or president of the board chair, the executive trustee, committee appointed to address conflicts of interest, except to the extent additional disclosure is necessary in connection with the implementation of this policy. Prior to board or committee action on a contract or transaction involving an actual or potential conflict of interest, an interested person having a conflict of interest and who is in attendance at the meeting shall disclose all facts material to an actual or potential conflict of interest. Such disclosure shall be reflected in the minutes of the meeting, if minutes are routinely kept or shall be disclosed in a letter or memorandum delivered to the executive director. If board members are aware that staff or other volunteers have a conflict of interest, relevant facts should be disclosed by the board member or by the interested person him/herself if invited to the board meeting as a guest for purposes of disclosure. C) this policy shall be reviewed annually by each member of the board of trustees. Any changes to the policy shall be communicated to all staff and volunteers.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The board of trustees determines the executive director's compensation; the executive director determines compensation for senior management personnel, and approves all salary decisions. A total figure for staff compensation is approved by the board of trustees as part of the annual budget process. The fy 2024 budget was approved at the april, 2023 board meeting and is reflected in the minutes. In october 2023, a review was completed for all senior level (executive director, dean of students, vp development, directors of finance and mti onsite and outreach)and mid-level managers and support staff. Salaries were guided by nonprofit industry standards, with information available thorugh published national surveys conducted by the national guild for community arts education, and by published job listings in the field.

The conservatory recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that the conservatory had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition and/or disclosure. The conservatory is no longer subject to examination by applicable taxing jurisdictions for periods prior to june 30, 2021.

LEGENDARY CELLIST PABLO CASAL WAS AMONG ITS FOUNDERS, AND JAZZ LEGEND CAB CALLOWAY ONCE SERVED ON ITS BOARD. MCW'S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE THE EXTRAORDINARY BENEFITS OF MUSIC TO ALL IN OUR COMMUNITY. TODAY WE SERVE 2,700 STUDENTS OF ALL AGES, ABILITIES, AND BACKGROUNDS: 800 WHO TAKE LESSONS AND CLASSES IN OUR WHITE PLAINS FACILITY AND 1900 WHO PARTICIPATE IN OUTREACH PROGRAMS ON COLLABORATION WITH 30 COMMUNITY PARTNERS. OUR MUSIC PROGRAMS INCLUDE ONE -ON- ONE INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL INSTRUCTION, PERFORMING ENSEMBLES, THEORY, COMPOSITION, MUSIC PRODUCTION, EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSES, SUMMER PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS, LIFELONG LEARNING FOR ADULTS, AND FREE COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES. WE ADDITIONALLY OFFER AN HONORS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM FOR SERIOUS, TALENTED HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUMENTALISTS, AND MCW THEATRE ARTS PREP WHICH PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN MUSICAL THEATRE. INSTRUCTION IS PROVIDED BY A FACULTY OF 74 PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS AND EDUCATORS, OF WHOM 80% HOLD MASTER OR DOCTORAL DEGREES.OUR SIGNATURE PROGRAMS FULFILL OUR MISSION TO PROVIDE THE EXTRAORDINARY BENEFITS OF MUSIC TO OUR ALL IN OUR COMMUNITY. THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM PROVIDES NEED-BASED TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR FINANCIALLY DESERVING STUDENTS, ENSURING THEY CAN PURSUE MUSIC TRAINING FROM PRESCHOOL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ALUMNI HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED TO THE NATIONS'S TOP UNIVERSITIES AND CONSERVATORIES, INCLUDING UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, YALE UNIVERSITY, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL, PEABODY CONSERVATORY, INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MUSIC, AND MANY OTHERS. OUR ALUMNI INCLUDE PROFESSORS AT JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY AND MIT, A MUSIC TEACHER IN ROCHESTER, NY, A LOCAL PEDIATRICIAN, A MEMBER OF THE NY PHILHARMONIC, TWO INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED PIANISTS, THE MUSIC DIRECTOR OF MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY, AND THOUSANDS OF ALUMNI IN COUNTLESS PROFESSIONS RIGHT HERE IN WESTCHESTER AND ALL AROUND THE NATION. IN FALL 2022 WE COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION OF FIVE IMPORTANT NEW TEACHING STUDIOS, INCLUDING AN AUDIO / VIDEO RECORDING STUDIO AND TECHNOLOGY LAB WHICH NOW HOUSE PROGRAMS IN MUSIC PRODUCTION AND RECORDING. THE RECORDING STUDIO IS NETWORKED TO OUR RECITAL HALL, ENABLING US TO DOCUMENT EVERY STUDENT AND FACULTY PERFORMANCE. WE ALSO OFFER LIVE-STREAMED PERFORMANCES, WORKSHOPS, AND OTHER PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS. ONE OF ONLY 16 COMMUNITY SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE TO HOLD ACCREDITATION FROM THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS OF MUSIC, THE CONSERVATORY HAS INSPIRED GENERATIONS OF STUDENTS AND CONTRIBUTED TO A VIBRANT MUSICAL LIFE IN THE COUNTY, THE REGION AND BEYOND.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0OUTREACH PROGRAMTHE CONSERVATORY'S MUSIC THERAPY INSTITUTE (MTI) WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1986 TO EXPAND ITS PROGRAMS TO INCLUDE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES. TODAY THE PROGRAM SERVES 1,900 CHILDREN AND ADULTS, PROVIDING INDIVIDUAL AND SMALL - GROUP MUSIC THERAPY ONSITE AT THE CONSERVATORY, AND GROUP MUSIC THERAPY ON AN OUTREACH BASIS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH 30 COMMUNITY PARTNERS, INCLUDING PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS, SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS, MEDICAL FACILITIES, SENIOR CARE CENTERS, AND SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES. SERVICES ARE PROVIDED BY A FACULTY OF 12 BOARD - CERTIFIED MUSIC THERAPISTS WHO HOLD UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES IN MUSIC AND MASTERS OR DOCTORAL DEGREES IN MUSIC THERAPY. THE CONSERVATORY BUILDING INCLUDES A DEDICATED MUSIC THERAPY UNIT WITH FOUR SESSION STUDIOS AND AN OBSERVATION ROOM FITTED WITH ONE-WAY MIRRORS AND HEAD SETS, ENABLING PARENTS, CAREGIVERS AND OTHER THERAPY PROVIDERS TO OBSERVE SESSIONS. MTI HAS RECEIVED AWARDS FROM ARTS WESTCHESTER AND FROM ASCAP (AMERICAN SOCIETY OF COMPOSERS, AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS). IN 2013, MTI ESTABLISHED HEALING OUR HEROES, PROVIDING MUSIC THERAPY SERVICES FOR U.S. MILITARY VETERANS DEALING WITH WAR - RELATED INJURIES, AT NO COST TO THEM OR THEIR FAMILIES. SERVING 15 - 20 VETERANS EACH YEAR, THE PROGRAM PROVIDES EACH VETERAN WITH TWO TO THREE YEARS OF WEEKLY INDIVIDUAL MUSIC THERAPY SESSIONS, AS WELL AS TWO WEEKLY GROUP SESSIONS: MUSIC FOR SELF-CARE WHICH HELPS VETERANS LEARN TO USE MUSIC FOR RELAXATION AND STRESS REDUCTION; THE VETERANS BAND WHICH GIVES VETERANS TO OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE MUSIC TOGETHER AND TO COMPOSE ORIGINAL SONGS. HEALING OUR HEROES HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AND SUPPORTED BY DISABLED AMERIAN VETERANS, AND IS FEATURED IN MUSIC VETS, A RECENTLY RELEASED DOCUMENTARTY FILM ABOUT THE CHALLENGES FACED BY VETERANS DEALING WITH THE WOUNDS OF WAR AS THEY STRUGGLE TO READJUST TO CIVILIAN LIFE. MUSIC VETS WAS PREMIERED AT THE KENNEDY CENTER IN OCTOBER, 2023 AND HAS HAD SCREENINGS AT THE BEDFORD PLAYHOUSE, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY AND OTHER LOCATIONS.

STUDENTS HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO PERFORM AS SOLOISTS, AND IN PERFORMING ENSEMBLES IN RECITALS TAKING PLACE THORUGHOUT THE YEAR. FACULTY CONCERTS OFFER AN OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR HIGH LEVEL PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCES IN COMFORTABLE, FAMILIAR LOCATIONS. ALL CONCERTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THE MAJORITY OF STUDENT RECITALS TAKE PLACE IN THE CONSERVATORY'S BEAUTIFUL 150 - SEAT RECITAL HALL, AND ARE RECORDED FROM THE CONTROL ROOM OF OUR RECORDING STUDIO. TWO FACULTY ENSEMBLES - THE MCW FACULTY STRING QUARTET AND THE MCW FACULTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL FACULTY GUEST ARTISTS - ARE CURRENTLY PERFORMING IN-PERSON IN OUR RECITAL HALL AND LIVE-STREAMED CONCERTS FROM OUR RECORDING STUDIO. COMMUNITY CONCERTS ALSO TAKE PLACE IN LOCAL LIBRARIES, COMMUNITY CENTERS, HEALTH CARE AND SENIOR CARE FACILITIES, AND OTHER SIMILAR VENUES. OUR STUDENTS AND FACULTY ARE ALSO INVITED TO PERFORM AT BENEFIT EVENTS FOR OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. MASTER CLASSES ARE SCHEDULED AT THE CONSERVATORY IN WHICH SELECTED STUDENTS ARE COACHED BY GUEST ARTISTS. PERFORMANCE CLASSES FOR STUDENTS IN OUR HONORS AND PREP PROGRAMS ADDITIONALLY PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR ADVANCED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO HONE THEIR PERFORMANCE SKILLS.
