“Project pericles is a nonprofit organization that encourages and facilitates commitments by colleges and universities to include social responsibility and participatory citizenship as essential elements of their educational programs. Project pericles is committed to reawakening american undergraduate education to its responsibility to prepare students to be effective citizens and leaders of their communities, nations, and world. We collaborate with colleges and universities to infuse civic engagement elements across the curriculum, ensuring the successful integration of theory and practice. At each institution, we work with program directors and faculty members to develop rigorous programs in their classrooms, on their campuses, and in their communities. Through national conferences, workshops, and meetings, project pericles brings together individuals, teams, and community members from different colleges and universities and surrounding communities. It offers opportunities for students, faculty, staff, administrators, presidents, alumni, and community members working on civic engagement projects on different campuses to come together to share ideas, collaborate, and inspire each other. Our annual workshop series on civic engagement trains hundreds of college students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and community leaders. Through our presentations at national conferences, we share best practices with hundreds of faculty and staff members across the country. Through publications and web resources we make research on best practices and over 100 innovative course syllabi available to college instructors and other interested educators.”

“Debating for democracy (d4d) is a distinctive campus-based program that represents the mission of project pericles in action. D4d promotes civic engagement and effective advocacy skills among a wide range of students. Through d4d on the road workshops hosted on periclean campuses, the d4d national conference in new york city, the d4d letters to an elected official competition, and co-curricular programs on each campus, students acquire the tools and tactics they need to advance their issues and to get their messages across to community groups, fellow students, the general public, government officials, and the media. The periclean faculty leadership (pfl) program is a leadership and course development program dedicated to incorporating civil dialogue, civic engagement, and social responsibility across the undergraduate curriculum. With support from project pericles, the periclean faculty leaders create new courses incorporating civic engagement; promote civil dialogue locally through lectures, town hall meetings, and public events; and advance public scholarship nationally and internationally through publications and conference presentations. Courses address grand challenges: climate change, education access, immigration, mass incarceration, public health, race and inequality, and voter engagement. They champion civil discourse, civic engagement, and social responsibility in the classroom, on the campus, and in the community. We have a diverse group of professors from a wide range of disciplines including archaeology and classical studies, business law, chemistry, communications, computer science, dance, education, english, environmental studies, history, mathematics and statistics, philosophy, physics, psychology, religious studies, sociology, theatre, urban studies, and women's and gender studies. Within higher education, project pericles promotes civic engagement and social responsibility. We conduct multi-campus initiatives and research projects on civic engagement; convene colleges, universities, and leading experts in higher education; foster collaboration between colleges and universities; and present our work at national conferences. A goal of our work is to create efficient and cohesive educational experiences for students that integrate academic learning, civic engagement, and preparation for life after college; and to share innovative curricular designs with the broader higher education community.”
