Mission

White plains downtown district management association, inc. (wpddma) was formed to improve the general business climate of the downtown white plains business area through a variety of programs that promote consumer activity in the downtown area.

See schedule o for the description on the special events programspecial events programin fiscal year 2012 - 2013, the wpddma hosted several events including: people attendedwhite plains earth week 1,000 $ 5,000 (@ $5 per person)jazzfest 1,200 $ 12,000 (@ $10 per person)cinco de mayo 1,500 $ 25,000 (@ $25 per person)oktoberfest 3,000 $ 75,000 (@ $25 per person)st. Patrick's day 5,000 $125,000 (@ $25 per person)new year's eve 25,000 $500,000 (@ $20 per person)the events are designed to bring people downtown to shop, eat and experience the city. During each event various streets are closed to traffic and programmed with activities, food and music. In 2012-2013, the wpddma's events were attended by over 37,000 people. The wpddma's events stimulated spending of over $779,000 in downtown white plains on food, beverages, parking, clothing and hotels. The events also provide business owners with the opportunity to capture new and hopefully repeat customers. By helping to keep local business strong, the wpddma plays an important role in local job creation and retention.

See schedule o for the description on business outreachbusiness outreachthe wpddma provides local businesses and residents with information on business openings and sales, local events, government plans and regulations, proposed new development projects, resources for local business owners and much more. We publish a weekly on-line newsletter that is distributed to 900 individuals.the wpddma operates a sidewalk sale program to provide local merchants with the opportunity to capture the excess foot traffic brought into the downtown during wpddma events. The wpddma secures the city permits and insurance for all of the merchants that participate in our sidewalk sales program. In 2012 - 2013 the wpddma had six sidewalk sales with 60 participating merchants. Post informational meeting with sidewalk sales participants show strong enthusiasm for this activity among the local merchants. On average business increases between 25% and 50% during the sidewalk sale.the wpddma regulary hosts and promotes seminars to help local merchants run their businesses more efficiently and profitably. During the last year the wpddma hosted and/or promoted the following seminars, workshops and activities to wpddma businesses:1. Community capital bank webinar on social media marketing2. Governor's meeting status of tappan zee bridge replacement3. Free shredding day hosted by city of white plains & the wpddma4. Journal news media group seminar on digital marketing5. Westchester grow conference westchester community collegein fiscal year 2012 - 2013, the wpddma collected and compiled information for the second printing of its "white plains dining guide." in fiscal year 2012 - 2013, the wpddma spent over $16,000 to print 10,000 copies of the guide for distribution to area hotels, residents, community organizations, hospitals and city government. The distribution was a huge success. To date, over 8,750 copies of the guide have been distributed.the wpddma provides its members and downtown business and property owners with important information concerning government requirements and programs. During fiscal year 2012 - 2013, the wpddma sent out several notices concerning snow removal requirements, changes in outdoor cafe regulations, and street closings due to repaving activity. The wpddma also provided information to the business community concerning the rezoning of the city's office parks to allow for residential and retail uses.after hurricane sandy hit the area, the wpddma provided property and business owners with information on disaster loans being made by the us small business administration. The wpddma also provided business owners with information on energy saving incentives being offered by con edison and the new york state energy research and development authority.in fiscal year 2012 - 2013, the wpddma explored the feasibility of providing valet parking on east post road and mamaroneck avenue with area business owners. The wpddma concluded that on east post road there was no convenient parking available to park the cars that would be used by a valet service. The mamaroneck avenue and main street location had potential; a request for proposals will be developed next year to further explore the viability of this effort.the wpddma serves as a liaison for local merchants when working with city agencies. We help local merchants understand local government regulations, such as the requirements for outdoor cafes, and aide with individual issues with municipal departments including buildings, parking authority, planning, code enforcement, police, fire etc.

DUE TO THE SHEER VOLUME OF PEDESTRIANS ON THE STREETS, PARTICULARLY DURING LUNCHTIME AND IN THE EVENING, LITTER WILL ACCUMULATE AND GARBAGE CONTAINERS WILL BE FILLED. THE CLEAN SWEEP TEAM, CLAD IN HIGHLY RECOGNIZABLE AND BRIGHTLY COLORED YELLOW TEE-SHIRTS, IS CONTINUOUSLY WALKING THROUGH THE DOWNTOWN, SWEEPING THE SIDEWALKS AND EMPTYING THE LITTER BASKETS. THE CLEAN SWEEP PROGRAM IS MORE THAN A STREET CLEANING PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM IS AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE WHITE PLAINS DOWNTOWN DISTRICT MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION'S (WPDDMA) WORK TO IMPROVE THE IMAGE AND THE PERCEPTION OF THE DOWNTOWN. THE PROGRAM SIGNALS TO RESIDENTS, VISITORS, AND WORKERS THAT THE CITY AND THE WPDDMA BELIEVE IT IS WORTHWHILE TO INVEST IN THE CITY. THE CLEANER THE DOWNTOWN, THE MORE WILLING PEOPLE ARE TO COME DOWN TO SHOP, EAT, AND SPEND THEIR LEISURE TIME. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN PRAISED BY PROPERTY OWNERS, RETAILERS AND VISITORS ALIKE FOR THE MARKED IMPROVEMENT TO THE CHARACTER OF OUR DOWNTOWN.THERE ARE 20 CITY BLOCKS CONTAINED WITHIN THE WHITE PLAINS BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID) COMPRISING OVER 20,000 FEET OF LINEAR FLOOR AREA. OVER 2,100 BAGS OF GARBAGE ARE PICKED UP AND REMOVED FROM THE STREETS PER MONTH BY THE WPDDMA. IN ADDITION, THE WPDDMA'S GREEN MACHINE, A SIDEWALK SWEEPER, AND GUM BUSTER ARE OUT SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, WEATHER PERMITTING, AND MAINTAIN CLEAN SIDEWALKS. IN 2012, THE WPDDMA REMOVED GUM ON THE ENTIRE EAST SIDE OF MAMARONECK AVENUE AS WELL AS A FEW LOCATIONS OF MITCHEL PLACE AND ON THE EAST SIDE OF MAMARONECK.THE WPDDMA STRIVES TO KEEP THE STREETS CLEAN AND STREET FURNITURE IN GOOD CONDITION. PEOPLE WANT TO VISIT AND SHOP IN LOCATIONS THAT ARE CLEAN, ATTRACTIVE AND VIBRANT. THE WPDDMA, THROUGH ITS CLEAN SWEEP, EVENTS AND SIDEWALK SALES PROGRAMS ENSURES THAT DOWNTOWN WHITE PLAINS IS ATTRACTIVE TO VISITORS, SHOPPERS, WORKERS AND RESIDENTS OF WHITE PLAINS.IN FISCAL YEAR 2012 - 2013, THE WPDDMA CONTRACTED WITH CASA VERDE CORPORATION OF WHITE PLAINS TO PLANT AND MAINTAIN 25 LARGE STREET PLANTERS WITH A DAZZLING ARRAY OF FLOWERS INCLUDING CANNA PRETORIA, NICOTIANA SARATOGA, COLEUS, ANGELONIA, IMPOMOEA AND SCAEVOLA. THESE PLANTINGS COUPLED WITH MANY MORE DONE BY THE CITY OF WHITE PLAINS BROUGHT SIGNIFICANT BEAUTY TO OUR MAIN DOWNTOWN CORRIDORS.
