Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The accreditation commission for education in nursing (acen) supports the interests of nursing education, nursing practice, and the public by the functions of accreditation. Accreditation is a peer review, self-regulatory process by which non-governmental associations recognize educational institutions or programs that have been found to meet or exceed standards and criteria for educational quality. Accreditation also assists in the further improvement of the institutions or programs as related to resources invested, processes followed, and results achieved. The monitoring of certificate, diploma, and degree offerings is tied closely to state examination and licensing rules and to the oversight of preparation for work in the profession.

Provides specialized accreditation for all types of nursing education programs (Clinical Doctorate, Master's, Baccalaureate, Associate, Diploma, and Practical Nursing Programs).

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

“The form 990 is jointly reviewed by the CEO and Controller. It will then be forwarded to the Treasurer and Board Chair for Initial review and distributed to the Finance Committee and Audit Committee upon concurrence from the Treasurer. The full Board of Commissioners will then get a formal presentation of the form 990 along with its audited financial reports in the annual summer BOC meetings.”

“ACEN has conflict of interest policies for all its full time personnel, all members of the Board of Commissioners and all program evaluators performing site visits. Monitoring and compliance of the policies are done annually for employees, at every board meeting for board members (usually 3 times a year) and before every site visit for program evaluators. Monitoring is done via verbal discussion, conference calls and documented with standard conflict of interest forms. Documentation of board meeting Minutes is kept on file as well.”

“The organization does not have any uncertain tax positions reported on the audited financial statements under FIN 48. ACEN qualifies as a charitable organization as defined by Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and, accordingly, is generally exempt from federal income taxes under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(a). Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is made in the financial statements. ACEN is also exempt from New York State, Georgia, New York City, and Atlanta income taxes. ACEN is subject to taxes on unrelated business income, if any. ACEN believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and as such does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. With few exceptions, ACEN is no longer subject to income tax examinations by the U.S. federal, state, or local tax authorities for years before 2010.”
