“The medici archive project, inc. (the organization"), a new york not-for-profit corporation, was incorporated in may 1995 and commenced operations in september 1995. The organization's purpose is to create electronic access to the archive of the medici grand dukes of tuscany (1537-1743), bringing millions of documents to scholars of history, art and culture. In addition, it has created world-wide public access to the historical data in the medici granducal archive by way of a fully searchable on-line database, to train emerging scholars in the values and methods of archival research through hands-on work in the medici granducal archive and to develop new technological solutions for information management in the humanities through the pioneering challenge of accessing the medici granducal archive. The organization is encouraging the publication of documentary material, in the medici granducal archive and elsewhere, in print and electronic formats. The organization advocates the importance of the medici granducal archive and other documentary sources in achieving a full understanding of human activity in past ages and also has a program of three-year post-doctoral fellowships to help form the next generation of archival historians. The organization is supported primarily through donor contributions and grants.”
