Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is to prevent criminal relapse among the incarcerated and to stop the intergenerational cycle of crime by offering individuals, youth, and families affected by incarceration and other societal ills a place of hope and community where lives can be rebuilt, families mended, and lessons learned; where men, women, and children receive the spiritual, social and practical tools to become productive citizens.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The after school and summer program (asp) offers a safe haven, academic support, counseling, and youth development curriculum to help children move ahead to the next academic grade, graduate from high school, and stay free of juvenile delinquency and criminal activity. Started in 1999, the after school and summer program was initially geared to younger at-risk youth - specifically children of the incarcerated as well as those youth experiencing other societal at-risk factors. The asp's goal and priority is to provide quality after-school programs as well as case-management and intervention services, to youth and families residing in the mott haven neighborhood of the bronx which for many years has been plagued with various social problems, particularly poverty and crime. During the academic year, 35 students in grads prek - 5th grade were provided with academic support, sports instruction, and counseling. In grades 6 - 12, 40 students received support during the academic year. In addition, 40 students were offered academic support, and sports instruction during the summer program.
Activity 3
The family pastoral center (fpc) serves as a place of community and strength, where families affected by incarceration and other social factors, can find hope, solace, friendship, and support. The fpc provides case management, counseling, advocacy, and referrals to essential services, in order to help families deal with crises and ongoing challenges. The fpc offers religious services and education, a hot meal on saturdays, a food pantry, and a clothing bank.an initiative had been developed and implemented to work with the teens and this group is called the youth volunteer program. There are two groups of children: the pre-teen and teens' group. There are three members in the pre-teen group and seven members in the teen's group. Our group of teens both from the after school program (asp) and family and pastoral care (fpc) are used every saturday to assist the staff in different tasks such as making copies, displaying informative boards, taking pictures, organizing activities for little ones, and giving out items from the food pantry. The abraham house prison ministry keeps running every wednesday at riker's island for its second year. Currently, deacon john powers voluntarily shares the gospel's readings with inmates at gmdc and our social worker also attends once a month.this past year we celebrated ten first communions, fifteen baptisms, and seven teens received the sacrament of confirmation with the blessings of bishop josue iriondo and our revs. Fr. Houle, and fr. Peter raphael. Mass attendance throughout the year totaled to 8,600 individuals. Our spiritual sharing group-who consist of the reflection of the gospel-have met regularly twice a month on saturdays. Our members from the three programs at abraham house have had the opportunity to learn and to reflect from the bible readings and have requested to keep this group. Abraham house also hosts members of the program and community every first thursday of the month for one hour to pray and praise before the sacred heart of jesus. We had our annual spirtual retreat, on november 7th, 2010 that took place at mariandale center and many of our members of our three programs attended with a total of 100 persons. There is such wonderful cooperation among the staff of the pastoral center and a wonderful spirit of working together. We are blessed with dedicated teachers, co-workers and a staff that really wants to be there for others. This is a real "plus" for all of abraham house.

IRS990/Description0THE ALTERNATIVE TO INCARCERATION PROGRAM (ATI) IS THE CORE COMPONENT IN ABRAHAM HOUSE'S MISSION TO BREAK THE INTERGENERATIONAL CYCLE OF POVERTY AND CRIME. THE ATI PROGRAM WORKS WITH MOSTLY NON-VIOLENT CRIMINAL OFFENDERS WHO HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED BY THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM TO ABRAHAM HOUSE FOR A PERIOD OF REHABILITATION LASTING 1 TO 3 YEARS. THE PROGRAM HAS BOTH A RESIDENTIAL AND NON-RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT. TO GRADUATE, THE OFFENDER MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM AS WELL AS ABRAHAM HOUSE'S INTERNAL POLICIES AND GUIDELINES. THE PROGRAM FIGHTS THE HIGH RATE OF RECIDIVISM BY PREPARING CRIMINAL OFFENDERS FOR THE DAY THEY WILL REJOIN SOCIETY. PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FINANCIAL AND EMOTIONAL STABILITY OF THEIR FAMILIES AND TO ACT AS ROLE MODELS FOR THEIR CHILDREN, TO ACCEPT ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTHOOD AND TO LEARN HOW TO BREAK PATTERNS OF BEHAVIOR THAT MAY HAVE LEAD TO THEIR CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCES. DURING THIS PAST YEAR WE HAD THIRTEEN NON-RESIDENTS AND EIGHT RESIDENTS.
