Major Activities

Activity 2
Job training and career advisingintroducing public school culinary students to careers in the food service industry, engaging them as volunteers at industry events, providing job training classes and connecting them with internships and jobs is at the heart of c-cap's mission. Job shadows job shadow allows students to gain exposure to the world of work, to meet industry professionals and to see what it is really like to have a career in the culinary and hospitality industry. The experience of job shadow helps motivate students by showing them what they can achieve with hard work and dedication to career goals. C-cap new york held two job-shadowing days with a total of 89 students participating. Career awareness field trips and volunteering at industry events offered 100 students the opportunity to learn more about the industry and positions within it.job training and internship programin 2004 c-cap new york formalized its job-training program to prepare and place young people in part- and full-time positions, and this year offered a 8-week program. A total of 34 students were trained, 34 were placed in paid internships and 32 completed their internships in restaurants and corporate dining rooms throughout the city. C-cap's satellite locations also offered programs to help prepare students for the demands of the workplace, particularly the crucial "soft" skills needed for any job and job-seeking skills such as resume writing, networking and interviewing. For example, chicago offered week-long training programs in the fall and spring providing training to 40 students and los angeles partnered with ucla's dining services to offer internships to 10 students. Jobs c-cap staff in locations across the country cultivated industry contacts and arranged jobs to give students valuable work experience. C-cap staff helped more than 100 students and alumni in arizona, chicago, new york, philadelphia, virginia, and prince george's county maryland find paid, part-time and full-time jobs during the school year and summer.
Activity 3
College access and advisingc-cap plays an important role in college access for high school culinary students, supplementing the services of school guidance counselors, who are overwhelmed, and c-cap students' parents, who are generally not knowledgeable about post-secondary education. Workshops and visitsc-cap offered students a variety of college access activities including visits to colleges and college readiness workshops, covering topics such as: college research, understanding the concept of "best fit", financial aid options and the application process. In addition, all c-cap scholarship recipients participated in college 101 seminars designed to help them successfully make the transition from high school to college. C-cap staff also stayed in touch with recent scholarship winners to provide ongoing advisement aimed at increasing post secondary retention and graduation rates. Services were provided to more than 1,500 students and alumni.
