Friends of Island Academy (Friends) is a not-for-profit organization that provides supports and services to young people in New York City who are incarcerated, transitioning from incarceration to the community, or otherwise criminal justice involved. Our overall mission is to develop a long term support system that enables formerly incarcerated youth to minimize future contact with the criminal justice system and become empowered, economically independent adults who lead meaningful lives.In order to achieve this mission, we provide individually tailored supports and services to youth through a combination of pre and post-release neighborhood based advocacy, working with youth and families within the communities most impacted by disproportionate justice system involvement. For 29 years, Friends has had close working relationships with public agencies, private foundations, and service providers.
