IRS990/Desc0To be a birthplace for new, literate, intimate musicals, and a place where underappreciated musical gems from the past are rediscovered. In our 2022-23 Season, we saw a mix of new and old at The York. Cheek to Cheek: Irving Berlin in Hollywood proudly returned to our stage in the Fall slot after a wildly successful world premiere engagement the year before. Following that, we presented the New York premiere of Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust Road, a revue of that great songwriter's work, which reunited us with director Susan H. Schulman and choreographer Michael Lichetefeld, the creative team behind The York's landmark 1994 revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Merrily We Roll Along. The final mainstage production of that 2022-23 was a re-imagined revival of the musical Vanities. Vanities, adapted by Jack Heifner and David Kirshenbaum from Heifner's long-running off-Broadway play, first played New York in 2009, and we felt it deserved another look; our production was called "wonderfully poignant and "truly uplifting" by reviewers and audiences alike. We championed diversity, both on and off stage, and we continue to create shows that reflect the world around us. We rounded out our season with our beloved Musicals in Mufti series of underappreciated classics in staged concert form. The first show of the series, William F. Brown and Oscar Brand's How to Steal an Election, closed out the 2022-23 season, with the rest of the series launching us into 2023-24. How to Steal an Election, a remarkably prescient musical from 1968, was rediscovered by The York and may never have been seen again if not for us. This also brought back the Muftis after four long years, to the delight of York patrons and community members that attended. To provide support for the creators of new musical theatre and be a showcase for new musical theatre talent of all kinds.Continuing our longtime commitment to developing new musicals, The York Theatre held strong to that promise in the 2022-23 Season and provided our loyal audiences with seven presentations in our Developmental Reading Series, presented at no cost to the public. One of the highlights of this series was Dorie Clark and Marie Incontrera's Absolute Zero, a jazzy spy thriller which featured an all-female/trans-identifying cast and creative team. Absolute Zero is now enjoying a full production at Ohio Wesleyan Universityand could be a future York mainstage production. Just like in our Mainstage productions, many of these performers and writers are proudly making their Off-Broadway debuts. Following the presentations, The York staff meet with the writers to provide feedback and guidance on the next stages of their show's development. To serve the community by presenting free or low-cost musical theatre performances to under-served audiences. In addition to our free-of-charge Developmental Reading Series, we also provided free tickets to over 800 theatregoers to our Mainstage and Mufti series and to other special events. The York has a proud history of providing under-served communities, including students and senior centers, the opportunity to experience live musical theatrewhich is increasingly cost-prohibitive in New York. Included in this initiative were places like the Stein Center, the Mitchell-Lama Program, Hudson Guild Center, and Lenox Hill Senior Center.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0To provide students with opportunities for hands-on theatre education. The York Theatre Company offers year-round internships in our Artistic/Literary, Development, Management, and Marketing departments. Our interns are immersed in their chosen area, receiving personalized mentorship from our staff along the way. Throughout their time with us-and despite the necessity of working remotely, due to our flood--interns have the opportunity to diversify their skills by working within various departments, thereby gaining valuable hands-on experience of working within a professional not-for-profit theatre company. On Monday, April 17, 2023 we presented our first GenYork concertbased on our successful 15 Year NEO concert programwhich showcased work from eight emerging musical theatre writers, all under the age of 35. Our GenYork program exists to give opportunities to the next generation of artists and patrons, and creates a pipeline towards readings, workshops, and even mainstage productions.
