Since our founding in 1983, we have been an effective champion in the fight for economic, racial, and food justice. As a leading research and advocacy organization, we work to implement innovative yet practical solutions to hunger. We work to address the root causes of hunger and engage americans of all backgrounds in the fight to ensure that our society supplies living wage jobs and an adequate government nutrition safety net. We also supply direct service, helping americans access governmental and non-governmental sources of food and by building a new generation of anti-hunger leaders. Programs: advocacy, research, and policy: our advocacy team is a voice for the tens of millions of americans who struggle against u.s. Hunger. One of the most effective and courageous advocacy groups in the nation, we work directly with elected officials on the city, state, and federal levels to advance policies to end hunger and promote economic justice, like the hope act, a bill that will make it dramatically easier for low-income americans to apply for and access public benefits. We also conduct ground-breaking research and publish cutting-edge reports that propose bold and concrete solutions to hunger and poverty, such as recent reports detailing the need for more coordination between unemployment, snap, and wic applications throughout the us and our comprehensive, national plan to end hunger in america. Americorps vista: our americorps vista national service teams enable participants to serve the country while fighting hunger. In 2024, hfa held 319 volunteer trainings and recruited 2,165 volunteers who contributed 27,518 hours. Our efforts helped facilitate 567 programs to address food insecurity. A total of 72,160 individuals participated in nutrition programming and supported 31,782 households with food insecurity. Vista members also assisted with grants. All of hunger free america's projects are united by the basic goals of reducing hunger, improving nutrition, and empowering families to obtain more economic opportunities. Benefits access: our team works to connect low-income new yorkers with benefits to access food across all five boroughs. Our staff screens families and individuals for federal nutrition assistance programs and helps them through the application and recertification process. In 2024, we pre-screened 6,088 households for snap benefits, assisted 5,443 households submit their snap application, and successfully enrolled 4,052 households. Our 2024 efforts generate approximately $21 million in snap benefits annually. In 2024, we pre-screened 1,966 indviduals for benefits and successfully enrolled 1,545 individuals into the programs. Based on the average monthly cost of the wic food package for 2024, which is $77.28, our efforts in 2024 generated approximately $1,469,865.60 in wic benefits for eligible families. In addition to food assistance, participants who are enrolled also have access to valuable support services, including free nutrition and breastfeeding counseling. These services play a vital role in promoting healthier lifestyles, improving maternal and child health outcomes, and helping families navigate nutritional challenges during these crucial years in their lives. Our ongoing outreach efforts ensure that families not only access benefits but also gain the necessary tools and resources to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
