Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I - Line 1 & Part III - Line 1

For over 40 years, the foundation has been a leading funder and advocate for science and environmental research on the hudson river estuary and its watershed. Our mission is to make that science integral to decision-making and to support competent stewardship of this extraordinary resource. We pursue our mission with activities and funding that extend from the highly urbanized estuarine waters of the new york-new jersey harbor to the rural landscapes and communities of the hudson valley and its watershed all to achieve our vision of a resilient, ecologically sound river that provides essential services to the many diverse communities who live here. The hudson river faces many challenges. Climate change will likely re-shape how this ecosystem functions and the relationship that human communities share with it. An acceptable future must include a society that embraces efforts to achieve diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. Our vision requires us to be active participants in meeting these challenges. The foundation has supported generations of researchers from young students to senior scholars who have helped us define how this remarkable ecosystem functions. Together they have built a comprehensive understanding of the biological and physical characteristics of the river and estuary and how they have changed over the decades. We now understand why the hudson river is so important to coastwide stocks of striped bass and how populations of endangered sturgeon can be restored. There is much greater clarity about the distribution and fate of legacy pollutants like pcb's that have had immense impacts and will be the focus of restoration efforts that will extend over many years. The foundation funded research has provided important clues to the impact of storm surge barriers that might be used to provide protection to new york city from severe storms. Foundation staff work provide a bridge between the research community and those who make decisions on best to sustain and restore the hudson's waters. The foundation is home to the new york/new jersey harbor and estuary program (hep) and two urban waters ambassadors. Hep is deeply engaged with a network of key stakeholders from federal and state agencies and local communities in new york and new jersey. Recent efforts focus specifically on bringing federal funds to disadvantaged/environmental justice communities to help build their capacity to engage in the policy process and support restoration efforts in their communities. The foundation is the source of a wealth of information designed to meet the needs of many audiences. For the general public, the foundation offers research results, reports, and opportunities for education. We are active conveners of the scientific community and policy makers through seminars, workshops and meetings both in person and online. Our role as neutral, honest brokers able to facilitate respectful, fact-based exchanges that build understanding and trust. We respect and value that role and look forward to building upon our credibility through innovation and partnerships to achieve shared goals that will help restore and sustain the hudson river.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation is subject to the provisions of the financial accounting standards board's ("fasb") accounting standards codification ("asc") topic 740, income taxes, relating to accounting and reporting for uncertainty in income taxes. For the foundation, asc topic 740 is potentially applicable to pass through income from the foundation's limited partnership investments. Nonetheless, because of the foundation's general tax-exempt status, management believes asc topic 740 has not had, and is not anticipated to have, a material impact on the foundation's financial statements.

Schedule D, Part XII, Line 2D

During the year the foundation incurred a loss on uncollectible accounts of $294,394

Part XI Line 2D - Other Adjustments

Cancellation of grants $356,606
