Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Symphony space is a multi-disciplinary performing arts center where bold programming, presented in a uniquely welcoming environment, forges indelible relationships between artists and audiences. Our mission is to connect art, ideas, and community through our programs and our commitment to literacy and education through the arts. On our new york city stages, through national broadcasts, and in the classrooms and communities we serve throughout the country, symphony space fosters access to the arts for all.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Literature: selected shorts made great literature performed by stars of stage and screen available free of charge through public radio international broadcasts, podcasts, streaming from our website, and inflight entertainment on a major airline. Each week the radio broadcast reached approximately 220,000 listeners and the podcast was downloaded more than 100,000 times. Ticket prices for selected shorts live performances were no more than $28, and collections of past programs were available for sale as cds and digital downloads. The book clubs (for adults and children) and bloomsday on broadway also brought literature to many people at low prices. In addition, thalia kids book club camp provided summer activities to groups of young readers in four separate week-long sessions, approximately 24 children per session.
Activity 3
Music: symphony space is gaining increasing critical acclaim each season as a home for contemporary music. The music program was awarded the chamber music america/ascap award for adventurous programming in 2012 and 2014. Music series include in the salon, intimate concerts in the 168-seat thalia that usually include a mid-concert interview with a featured composer, and the annual music of now marathon, an eight-hour concert with onstage interviews that focuses on work created by living composers, from revered elder statespersons like gunther schuller, john corigliano, joan tower, and david del tredici, to mid-career composers such as gabriela ortiz, david leisner and tamar muskal, to younger composers fang man, adam o'farrill, huang ruo, and others. Special concerts in the 2013 season included liaisons, part one, a program of sondheim works re-envisioned for solo piano by composers from various genres.
