“Membership includes individuals or organizations who make an annual financial contribution to BREAD or who otherwise distinguish themselves through their service to BREAD.”
“Each member is entitled to vote for each vacant Board of Director position that is to be filled by voting members. Members can cast their ballots by mail or electronic means. Five hundred member votes constitute a quorum for a valid election. This is the sole voting privilege enjoyed by members.”
“The Controller and Director of Finance compare the Federal Form 990 to the audited financial statements. All variances are verified against schedules to determine that they are correct.”
“On an annual basis, members of the Board of Directors sign a new conflict of interest statement. Any possible conflicts listed are reviewed by the Vice President of Finance and Administration to determine if they truly reflect a conflict. If so, the statements are discussed with the Audit Committee. If the Committee believes the conflict is real, the Board Member is asked to either resign from the Board or to stop the activity that is creating the conflict.”
“Periodically, the human resource department receives general market data from an outside compensation consultant to determine if salaries are in line with organizations of similar mission and/or size. A more thorough market analysis of compensation of specific positions is provided by an outside compensation consultant on an ad hoc basis. The President's salary is reviewed by the Board of Directors on a periodic basis. This is discussed and documented in the executive session. These notes are kept by the Board Secretary and are not open to the public. However, the Board does seek the same independent comparison data for the President that BREAD seeks for all other staff, including other members of the Executive Team.”
“BREAD's website includes governance and financial information. Several charity and business rating sites, such as the Better Business Bureau and Charity Navigator also post these documents and additional information. BREAD also makes information available to the public upon request.”
“Bread for the World's activists and partners played a pivotal role in advocating for funding by organizing letters to members of Congress; participating in partner/coalition letters to congressional leadership; and meeting with congressional offices in Washington, D.C. Child Tax Credit: In 2024, we worked to build bipartisan support to expand the CTC, focusing on building public and policymaker understanding of the credit's role in reducing child poverty. With partners, Bread led an interfaith letter to congressional leadership encouraging passage of the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act without changes that could reduce the impact of CTC. Bread also supported additional sign-on letters emphasizing the CTC's importance in addressing economic hardship. Throughout the year, Bread mobilized grassroots support for the CTC and collaborated with partners to highlight the urgent need for action. Bread joined with the Circle of Protection to increase visibility and awareness around the legislation's potential impact. In February, Bread and the Circle met with faith-based advisors to both congressional and executive branch leaders to share perspectives and underscore the significance of the CTC for vulnerable children and families. WIC: In 2024, the WIC program faced the threat of not receiving full funding for the first time in over 25 years. In response, Bread conducted 34 in-district meetings, educating leaders on the importance of WIC and the Modern WIC Act. After the two minibus funding packages passed, Bread sent letters to leadership in the House and Senate thanking them for prioritizing nutrition and encouraging them to continue working to achieve a more food-secure world as they take up FY25 appropriations. On September 10th, Bread partnered with the National WIC Association for their WIC Voices Summit. At the summit, we joined forces to advocate for WIC and educate lawmakers and their staff about the program's essential role in combating hunger in the U.S. Farm Bill: The U.S. Farm Bill was a central part of our advocacy efforts in 2024. The Farm Bill sets national policies for nutrition, agriculture, conservation, and forestry. This legislation provides nutrition assistance to millions of Americans through programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Bread for the World advocated for a fair, equitable, and sustainable farm bill in 2024 when the bill was scheduled to be reauthorized. Bread also generated support for hunger-related improvements to the farm bill including a NAP-to-SNAP pathway for the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico, an expansion of the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP, which provides incentives to low-income families to purchase of fruits and vegetables), and better food date labeling. In December 2024, Congress passed a one-year extension of the 2018 Farm Bill. While we are encouraged by the temporary support provided through the extension, Bread's advocacy efforts will remain focused on securing a new Farm Bill in 2025. This comprehensive legislation is critical to promoting equity, sustainability, and nutrition security. Passage of $9 Billion in Emergency Humanitarian Assistance: In April, Congress passed, and President Biden signed into law, more than $9 billion in emergency humanitarian assistance. Without it, millions of people, especially children, would have been at risk of dying. This assistance funded food, nutrition, shelter, water, medical supplies, and other critical relief to tens of millions of people who live in multiple countries and regions on the verge of, or now experiencing, severe malnutrition and famine. The legislation also helped sustain critical bilateral support and multilateral financing to countries in crisis including hunger hotspots such as Sudan, Somalia, Armenia, Haiti, and Ethiopia.”
“Other: Program service expenses 870,704. Management and general expenses 21,122. Fundraising expenses 90,154. Total expenses 981,980.”
“To provide permanent capital and an ongoing stream of income.”
“Management has evaluated the Organization's tax positions and concluded that there are no significant uncertain tax positions that qualify for either recognition or disclosure in the accompanying consolidated financial statements.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Public Education: The Offering of Letters (OL) is Bread for the World's primary activism tool and on-ramp. The OL is a powerful event concept, where churches and community groups learn about hunger-related concerns and organize letter-writing to educate their Congressional representatives about policies to end hunger. These letters and emails from congregations, campuses, and community groups help inspire Congressional leaders to change policies and programs to reduce hunger in the U.S. and around the world. (To be continued in Schedule O)Bread supported the successes described here through sustained education, collaboration, and public witness. Bread worked alongside more than seventy-five partner organizations to build awareness and political will for policies that address hunger and provide emergency assistance. |
