IRS990/Desc0EXHIBITIONS & PUBLIC PROGRAMS:ARTISTS SPACE'S EXPLICIT HISTORICAL MISSION IS TO BE A PLATFORM FOR ARTISTS-BE IT EMERGING OR ESTABLISHED-AND TO ACTIVELY ENGAGE THEM IN OUR PROGRAMS AS AUDIENCE MEMBERS AND AS PARTICIPANTS. SINCE JULY 2013, WE HAVE WELCOMED OVER 9,000 VISITORS, SUPPORTED MORE THAN 100 ARTISTS, PERFORMERS, FILMMAKERS, WRITERS, MUSICIANS, CURATORS, ART HISTORIANS AND CULTURAL THEORISTS, AND PROVIDED ART EDUCATION TO OVER 120 AT-RISK MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)BEYOND THESE NUMBERS, ARTISTS SPACE'S IMPACT ON NEW YORK'S CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL LIFE CAN BE FOUND IN THE WRITING, DEBATE, DISCUSSION, AND THOUGHT GENERATED BY OUR PROGRAMS. BY OFFERING A CONTEXT THAT IS AT ONCE CRITICAL AND SOCIAL, INTIMATE AND ACCESSIBLE, ARTISTS SPACE CONTINUES TO BE NEW YORK'S PRIMARY DESTINATION FOR ARTISTS-DRAWING THE CITY'S THREE GENERATIONS TOGETHER AROUND THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS.BEGINNING WITH THE LAUNCH OF A NEW WEBSITE IN FALL 2013, THIS PAST YEAR WAS DISTINGUISHED BY THE PROGRAMMATIC INTEGRATION AND SYNERGIZING OF OUR CORE ACTIVITIES. EXHIBITIONS NOW TAKE PLACE AT BOTH ARTISTS SPACE EXHIBITIONS AND ARTISTS SPACE BOOKS & TALKS, WHERE THEY INSPIRE OUR ONGOING SERIES OF LECTURES, SYMPOSIA, PERFORMANCES AND SCREENINGS, AND ARE EQUALLY INSPIRED BY THE DISCOURSE THEY GENERATE. WITH ARTISTSSPACE.ORG SERVING AS A QUASI-THIRD VENUE, THE CONVERSATIONS BEGUN BY OUR WORK NOW UNFOLD OVER TIME, AND WELL BEYOND THE LOCAL CONTEXT OF NEW YORK. OUR EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM CONSISTED OF THE FOLLOWING;PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL/BEWARE OF A HOLY WHORE (JUNE 30 AUGUST 25, 2013): TAKING ITS TITLE FROM RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER'S 1971 FILM "BEWARE OF A HOLY WHORE," THE EXHIBITION CONSIDERED THE NOTION OF SELF-REFLEXIVITY IN DIFFERENT MODES OF CULTURAL PRODUCTION. AT 38 GREENE STREET, A SINGLE SCULPTURE BY THE LATE DUANE HANSON (HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, 1990/1992) WAS PRESENTED, AND AT 55 WALKER STREET, A FULLY FUNCTIONING REPLICA OF THE HOTEL BAR FEATURED PROMINENTLY IN FASSBINDER'S FILM WAS INSTALLED. THE BAR SERVED AS A BACKDROP FOR NEWLY COMMISSIONED TIME-BASED WORKS BY A YOUNG GENERATION OF ARTISTS WHO WERE INVITED TO ENGAGE WITH THE FILM'S MISE-EN-SCENE OF CONTAINED EMOTIONAL, CREATIVE, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INTERACTION AS A MIRROR OF ARTISTIC PRODUCTION. AARON FLINT JAMISON (SEPTEMBER 15 NOVEMBER 10, 2013): THIS WAS AARON FLINT JAMISON'S FIRST U.S. SOLO EXHIBITION (*1979, MONTANA). USING CUTTING-EDGE 3D LASER SCANNING TECHNOLOGY, JAMISON BUILT AN INSTALLATION THAT CONTINUALLY DOCUMENTED THE EXHIBITION WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BEING ITS CENTRAL OBJECT-A TAUTOLOGY BETWEEN OBJECT AND CONTEXT THAT RELATED AS MUCH TO MICHAEL ASHER'S TRADITION OF INSTITUTIONAL CRITIQUE AS IT EMPLOYED HIGH-END TECHNOLOGY FOR POETIC ENDS.RICHARD HOLLIS (SEPTEMBER 21 NOVEMBER 10, 2013): A SEMINAL FIGURE IN POSTWAR DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION, BRITISH GRAPHIC DESIGNER RICHARD HOLLIS (*1936) HAS PLAYED A CRUCIAL ROLE IN DELINEATING THE CRITICAL FUNCTION OF GRAPHIC DESIGN IN RELATION TO MASS COMMUNICATION, MAKING MANIFEST THE POLITICAL DIMENSIONS OF PICTURES IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN IMAGE AND TEXT. CONSISTING OF ROUGHLY 100 ITEMS DRAWN FROM THE DESIGNER'S ARCHIVE INCLUDING FINISHED PIECES, LAYOUTS, AND NOTES, THE EXHIBITION AT ARTISTS SPACE BOOKS & TALKS REFLECTED HOLLIS'S ENTIRE PROFESSIONAL LIFE AND WAS THE FIRST OVERVIEW OF HIS WORK IN THE US.MACHO MAN, TELL IT TO MY HEART: COLLECTED BY JULIE AULT (NOVEMBER 24, 2013 FEBRUARY 23, 2014): PRODUCED IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE GEGENWARTS MUSEUM IN BASEL, THE EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTED WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION OF JULIE AULT. AS ARTIST, CURATOR, WRITER, EDITOR, AND FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE ARTISTS' COLLABORATIVE GROUP MATERIAL, AULT HAS PARTICIPATED IN AND WITNESSED THE RADICAL CHANGES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE WITHIN THE NEW YORK ART COMMUNITY OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS. ORGANIZED TOGETHER WITH MARTIN BECK AND JASON SIMON, IT PROPOSED A RADICALLY DIFFERENT NOTION OF WHAT CONSTITUTES A COLLECTION, WHICH IN AULT'S CASE IS BASED ON PERSONAL RELAT
