“The executive committee is comprised of the officers of the board, and all are members of the governing body. The executive committee may exercise, subject at all times to the general direction and control of the board, all of the powers and authority necessary to conduct the normal operations of the academy, including authorization to sign documents on behalf of the academy. In addition, it has a substantial body of archival material related to the history of the academy and its artist members. The academy employs a curator to ensure that the collections are protected and preserved. Most works of art owned by the academy have been given by its artist members in order to fulfill membership requirements, while a smaller group of works have been donated by others. The collections are maintained for the promotion of american art, rather than for financial gain. In conformity with accounting policies generally followed by art museums, the value of the academy's collections has been excluded from the statement of financial position.”
