Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The reece school provides a highly academic elementary special education program for children who need more support than can be provided in a traditional public school setting. Reece students are academically capable but may be psychologically fragile or have issues impacting their ability to fully access their education in their current school placement. At reece, children with speech/language impairments or who have emotional, learning or other disabilities are given high levels of academic, social and emotional support in a nurturing and well-structured environment.

The school's most significant activities in the year ended june 30, 2015 were providing the following services to the community that encompassed the five boroughs of new york city: a comprehensive academic and therapeutic school age program for 90 intellectually capable, psychologically fragile children ages 5 - 13, including both academic and related services in speech, ot, counseling and independent living.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The school's external auditor prepares the form 990 from the audited financial statements and reviews with management. Management then provides a complete copy of the form 990 to all members of the board, prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

At the annual meeting of the board, the conflict of interest policy is reviewed with the officers and trustees. Each trustee and officer annually is required to sign a statement indicating whether conflicts may exist, including an agreement to disclose any conflicts that may arise in the interim.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The school's external counsel for labor and hr matters was in charge of the compensation determination process, which included a comparison with the information provided on the 990's of five comparable schools in the area, a review of the candidates goals and objectives and a recommendation to the board of trustees. The board reviewed the counsel's report and voted on the recommendation.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The school provides its form 990 to the website, guidestar.org, and also will make the form available to any member of the public within a reasonable period of time upon such request.

Additional Explanations

990,2C

The organization has a finance committee that assumes responsibility for the audit of its financial statements and the selection of an independent accountant. This selection has not changed from prior years.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Gaap requires that a tax position be recognized or derecognized based on a "more likely than not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The adoption of this guidance did not have an impact on the school's financial statements, as management believes that there are no uncertain tax positions within its financial statements. The schools form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, for the years ended june 30, 2012, 2013 and 2014 are subject to examination by the irs, generally for three years after they were filed.
