Form 990-ez, Part III

The basic mission of the american legion, and post 1029, is the on-going fight for veterans' rights - past, present, and future. To this end, this post does its best to keep the community of island park informed about veteran's issues and the contributions made by veterans to keep america free. The three largest programs that this post conducts annually are the memorial day parade, the veterans day ceremony, and the visit to the post of the disabled veterans from st. Albans and northport va hospitals. New for 2023 in conjunction with the village of island park is the adoption an "honor our veterans banner program" the objective is to mount banners containing pictures of local veterans along the main thoroughfare in island park. The post organizes and conducts the annual memorial day parade for the village of island park. The parade serves as positive reinforcement to the community of the contributions of all veterans, living and deceased, in all the wars over the long and storied history of our country. The post conducts, annually, on veterans day, a memorial and remembrance service at its monument located at the corner of long beach road and waterford road. While this service is primarily for veterans by veterans, it is attended by local clergy, politicians, residents of the community, the boy scouts, and the girl scouts. It serves as a time for private remembrances of our fallen comrades-in-arms and deceased members of the post and auxiliary unit. Annually, the post hosts the disabled veterans from two of our local va hospitals. These men and women are treated to an afternoon of food, entertainment and games, and a day out of the hospital. On average, 50 veterans are treated to this day out. The above events which were normally held at the post's island park location were held at another post's location due to the sale of the post's building and fixtures on october 20, 2008. The post also gives financial support to programs conducted by the county, state and national level american legion organizations, and to local charitable organizations to help further their aims and goals.
