Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Asian American Inter Community Service (AICS), a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, is dedicated to the health and well-being of the communities around us with a preferential focus on the under-served and hard-to-reach population segments. Our Mission is to provide people with Awareness, Education and Knowledge - our three pillars of community service. We strive to build up communities sufficiently aware and knowledgeable to develop abilities to prevent and manage diseases thus building up healthy and robust communities. The under-served and the hard-to-reach communities of different ethnic origins have barriers to access to health care and health education due to linguistic challenges, economic status, education level, mental health, and sexual orientation, access to social media or by the geographical region of their residence.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
AICS has been privileged to serve the Asian American community and other residents of the County for 16 years now. We have built strong working networks with many CBOs and FBOs in the County and worked well with them to achieve the targets of the Montgomery County FY 2021 Community grant. The following report briefly describes the activities undertaken and the targets achieved. Mental Health: To effectively reach the more isolated populations and seniors, AICS teamed with several CBOs and FBOs, like CCACC, GNFA, B. L Media, CC Infotech, You are not Alone, Tamil and Arabic community leaders to make informational videos targeting key populations on the need to safeguard physical and mental health during the lockdown, about suicide prevention, info about the PEARLS program, mitigating stigma relating to mental health issues etc. The videos have been uploaded on Youtube, Facebook, and other websites to reach the communities and we have received very positive feedback and queries regarding the PEARLS program. Outreach: AICS counselors participated in a) Guru Nanak Foundation of America (GNFA) mental health conference on zoom and introduced PEARLS program to its 150+ attendees. b) Rotary Club of Washington Global's zoom talk on Mental health among women and children in low and middle income countries. c) Asian American Center of Frederick (AACF) with 125 attendees. d) For a contactless outreach, flyers of the PEARLS counseling program were also added to the food boxes during food distribution with American Diversity Group and Islamic Center of Maryland. Face coverings and masks: AICS volunteers stitched 100% cotton and washable face masks and distributed among the most vulnerable, namely senior living facilities and front line workers. AICS stepped to fulfil the demand for face coverings, especially when the nation was facing an extreme shortage of medical grade PPE in the summer of 2020. Additionally, AICS also received a shipment of 1000 cloth face masks from the DHHS Montgomery County, MD to distribute to the most affected zip codes in Silver Spring, MD and we distributed the same through ethnic grocery stores and local places of worship. Food insecurity: AICS teamed up with American Diversity Group, multiple times, attended by at least 300 people each time. Two food drives with Vietnamese American Services, with 70 attendees (all seniors) each time. AICS partnered in two food drives with Islamic Center of Maryland. And referred many seniors to the Manna Food Bank in Gaithersburg, for contactless food delivery. PEARLS depression counseling: Working with CC Infotech, VAS and CCACC, AICS developed Google forms surveys in Mandarin, Vietnamese and English. In total 300+ individual surveys were captured on the Google form and 140 paper surveys. More than 48 patients were found eligible and enrolled for the PEARLS depression counseling program. Recruitment, referrals, interpreting and direct services are being delivered to 48 clients, speaking English, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi and Gujarati etc. Potential clients are being screened on a rolling basis and several patients are being on boarded onto MIMIRX. AICS expects direct patient counseling to continue as recruitment too is ongoing and the program becomes more popular with 'word of mouth' referrals coming in. Several thousand people received AICS service in many of our programs, such as, support and coordination in Covid-19 vaccinations, mental health counseling during the Covid-19, buddy system to provide care and other services, education and awareness in the area of evidence based, Stanford Medical School Designed Programs in the area of self management of diabetes and self management of chronic pain. ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Please note: This return was originally submitted in February 2022 (02/15/2022) via US Postal Service. We were mistaken we can file 990-EZ via postal mail for 2021. We did not read the statement saying "The Taxpayer First Act requires tax-exempt organizations to electronically file information returns and related form for tax years beginning on or after July 1, 2021" accurately. We misunderstood as our year began on January 1, 2021. We are sorry. It is clear to us now and going forward, only e-filing will be done. Thank you very much.
