“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING & DEVELOPMENTworks with New York Citys South Asian communities to identify shared needs and issues. Following our needs assessment conducted in 2010, we found that the citys South Asians lack shared community gathering spaces devoted to civic engagement and arts and culture that embrace the diversity of South Asians. There is also a shortage of city-administered programs that address the needs of the South Asian population, especially in regards to the diverse languages, religions, and cultures present in the community. Many stay-at-home women and the elderly who have limited English skills face isolation. Chhaya works with community members and leaders and partner organizations on initiatives and events to address these growing needs.Its South Asian Community Home (SACH)provide a safe, accessible, multi-generational space and comprehensive services to South Asians in NYC that celebrates diverse South Asian cultures, and builds collective strength.It also partners and advises local and national organizations to document the needs and contributions of South Asian and other immigrants and advocates that adequate resources are invested in supporting these communities. “990 page 6 section c line 20 and page 7effective march 24, 2015, afreen alam became the executive director of the organization. On june 24,2016, afreen alam resigned as the executive director of the organization, due to illness. Annetta seecharran resigned as a board member on march 31, 2016 and assumed the role of interim executive director on may 1,2016 to replace afreen alam, until such time that a new executive director is appointed.on november 1, 2016, the board appointed annetta seecharran as the executive director. On january 6, 2016, the 2015 treasurer, deepa patel, became the board co-chair. On march 30,2016, kim sookoo replaced deepa patel and joined as treasurer. Effective april 18, 2016 shona chakravartty assumed the role of co-chair together with deepa patel.”

“ENERGY EFFICIENCYChhaya promotes access to existing weatherization programs, including grants, to retrofit their homes. Retrofits are home improvements that reduce energy costs, and make the home more comfortable and healthier.FORECLOSURE PREVENTIONChhaya helps homeowners having trouble with their mortgage payments negotiate affordable and sustainable payments through loan modifications. We also educate at-risk homeowners about their options and warn them about various foreclosure rescue scams.HOMEOWNERSHIPOur homeownership program guides community members through the confusing process of buying a home. Those who complete the program are eligible for budget counseling, credit improvement and, for those income-eligible, down payment and closing cost assistance.”
