Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Mission of The River Fund New York is to feed and empower those we serve to move beyond the lines of poverty. This is accomplished by operating Poverty Frontline Centers where we address material hardship with: 1 - weekly groceries, 2 - benefits access, and 3 - support and education pathways from Cradle to College. The River Fund is widely recognized in New York City's poverty-combat arena as a leading organization that actively pioneers innovative approaches for tackling hunger, homelessness and poverty.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Despite 44 available poverty-services, from both public and private sources, most eligible households never access these programs, and for those who do enrollment is challenging: Each program requires pre-screening, qualification-assessment, lengthy applications, document-verification, and finally, if approved, periodic re-certification. This promotes poverty because household-heads spend weeks on each registration-instead of job-hunting. The River Fund offers one-stop prescreening, prequalification, enrollment and subsequent re-certifications for all of these benefits and services. This includes, free tax-filing, Food Stamp enrollment, Legal Aid and many other programs. The River Fund has become the primary partner in the Queens area for several community programs sponsored by The Food Bank for New York City, the NYC Human Resources Administration, the NYC Office of Financial Empowerment and other Federal, State and City entities that need strong, community-based organizations to advance important poverty-reduction objectives in our neighborhoods.

IRS990/Description0The River Fund New York is a community-based organization dedicated to the task of fighting hunger and rebuilding human dignity in dozens of New York City communities through our Client Choice Pantry and Mobile Programs. Going beyond Emergency Food Assistance and Hunger Relief, we help needy families through Nutritional Education, Income Support and a wide range of outreach services, which we track by means of our database technology and other systems. Thirty percent of our client population is comprised of household heads afflicted by debilitating conditions-and up to 40% among the more than 20,000 seniors we serve. Among the 160,000 beneficiaries we served in fiscal year 2012, at least 40% are children-a key focus demographic of our organization. As such, our permanent children's programs include distribution of organically grown vitamins, annual back-to-school supplies and free new shoes every January, when the harshest part of winter begins. We are also one of only 10 sites in New York City that hosts an 8-week summer workshop that brings parents/guardians and their children together in an enjoyable, hands-on curriculum, that enables kids to (1) understand food value and (2) prepare nutritious meals for themselves. In summer, we keep at-risk kids off the streets: Children aged 6 to 15 get to go on free vacations in the countryside, and 13 to 18 year-olds can join our dual-league basketball team, The River Fund Cobras, and/or our Summer Gardening Program. In FY 2012 we became the first mobile pantry operator in the United States to be accredited under the federal Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP). Communities nationwide benefitted-as did the overall Sandy Response when other Emergency Food Relief Organizations needed to launch their own mobile pantries. Flooding and blackouts hampered the major response organizations after Sandy. Therefore, The River Fund arrived in the flood zones first-within 24 hours. Working round-the-clock, with 20 years in mobile provisioning and well-practiced teams, we provided a week's worth of ready-to-eat groceries to households-plus toilet-paper, baby-supplies and pet-food. Coordinating daily with elected officials who had the most up-to-date information, we served the hardest-hit neighborhoods first-10,000 people in week one. That's when official systems kicked in-partnering with us to leverage our "first-in advantage." From week two, we added diapers, blankets, vitamins, hygiene-kits, sanitary napkins and cleaning supplies. As winter advances we delivered winter-gloves, -hats, -scarves and -coats. To maximize our impact, we channeled resources through local neighborhood-groups-creating nine "satellite-sites" by week four. As a result, in two months, we delivered 323 tons of product to 87,000 Sandy victims and 281 tons elsewhere. For Christmas, we launched toy-drives through affluent communities, media partners, foundations and corporations, yielding 20,000 toys to 7,803 needy kids. Everything considered, during fiscal year 2012 we collected and distributed $3,558,243 in "In-Kind" food, breads, beverages toys, stuffed animals and clothing. As policymakers struggle to balance budgets, programs for families designed to cushion poverty keep getting cut. To focus attention on this problem, The River Fund brought local businesses together to launch America's first "Child Poverty Awareness Day" on the second Sunday in August. This is expected to grow into an annual event for businesses to focus on children living in poverty in their communities and develop ways to help-thus encouraging corporate citizens more to take more of a role in addressing this problem than they have had in the past.
