“Volunteers of Shanti Fund are actively engaged in promoting peace and nonviolence through educational means since its inception in 1993.Programs of Shanti Fund to build bridges between main stream and highly educated immigrant communities werehighly admired and appreciated by the Suffolk County government. To honor Volunteers efforts the county government invited them to commission and place Gandhi statue within Suffolk County in 1997. Volunteers retained a famous American sculptor for a life size bronze Gandhi Statue. The statue was dedicated on October 2, 1998Gandhi birth anniversary and is currently gracing the Plaza Lebel of the Suffolk County Executive office building in Hauppauge, New York. As part of the educational efforts, which are strengthened after 9-11 catastrophic event in the American history, volunteers reached out to local schools to instill value of peace and nonviolence through various programs, including Peace Walk, Peace Poster Competition, Chorus of Peace Songs, Peace Skits, Peace Presentations, Peace Themed Movies and photo exhibitions. Volunteers of Shanti Fund have received hundreds of posters as part of the Peace Poster competition every year from the school age children of grade 1 to grade 12. Winners are felicited with awards and gifts certificates at a dignified ceremony in the presence of student artists, school officials and elected officials. For last 14 years, this winning art works have been made part of Shanti Fund Peace Art Calendar. Gandhi Peace Garden- To celebrate the Gandhis 153rd anniversary as well as his lifestyle to promote reverence for environment, a unique four-way partnership was forged. SUNY at Old Westbury provided space, Government of India thru Consulate General of India at New York played a key role, individual donors who adopted one or more tree at 500.00 each, and Shanti Fund a local NGO coordinated all phases to make a reality of Gandhi Peace Garden consisting of 150 trees, at least one from each state of USA. Shanti Fund in partnership with other organizations has initiated several new programs like a Black history month in February, b Joint Independence Day Celebration of South Korea and India in August, c Walt Whitman Birthplace Association and d Gandhi Lecture Series at SUNY- Old Westbury.”
