IRS990/Desc0CHAMPION CLUBS: In school year 2015-2016, SASF provided 129 Champions Club Afterschool Programs at school sites located throughout NYC, Mt. Vernon, and Yonkers, servicing 17,786 youth participants. Of the 129 programs, 79 of these contracts are funded through the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), SASFs largest funder; 63 of the 79 are Middle School programs. As our second largest funder, the NYS Education Department provides 35 contracts. Some highlights include: 2 of the 4 NYS schools selected by the First Familys Turnaround Arts Program (a national program established by the Presidents Committee on the Arts & Humanities) to perform at the White House, were SASF Champions Programs; students from MS 352 K and MS 284K performed at a gala talent show and met First Lady Michelle Obama. SASF was one of the few organizations nationally to receive AT&T Aspire grants in both 2012 and 2014. Designed to track entering 9th graders at high risk of dropping out through senior year of high school, our program at Flushing HS resulted in 90% of 73 participating students graduating in June 2016. The Drill Team at PS 9X was selected to close the 2016 NYC 21st Century Community Learning Center annual conference. The Ambassador of the United Kingdom visited MS 51R NYC Junior Ambassador Program students who then toured the United Nations. The MS 381K Dance Team, StepNotez, was selected to perform at the very popular UniverSOUL Circus at Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn. PS 146Q was featured on the National Autism website as a result of hosting a Family Game Night that raised over $800 for Autism Speaks during Autism National Awareness Month as part of the programs service learning project. With no prompting or even knowledge from staff, the MS 46M students demonstrated leadership, community awareness and compassion by organizing a holiday performance at their neighborhood senior center. Due to their outstanding STEM curriculum in Coding and 3D printing, PS 121X is featured on the Makerbot website and marketing materials. The Table Tennis team at MS 125Q won first place in a NYC middle school competition in boys, girls and junior divisions. Typically, sites operated for 36 weeks during the school year with an average of 12 hours per week. Champions Clubs combine educational support services with skill-based sports, physical fitness, health and wellness programs, visual and performing arts, community service learning projects, and cultural and education field trips. A key component of the Champions Club model is SASFs High School Today, College Tomorrow curriculum that helps prepare Middle School students for the crucial transition to High School and assist High School students with drop-out prevention programs, homework help, P/SAT and Regents test prep, college counseling, campus visits, internships, and workforce readiness programs. Our data indicates an increase in school day attendance and overall improvement in academic learning as a result of participation in our programs. SASF is so important and plays a vital role in the development of youth in our communities. SASF helps to supplement the limited enrichment programs available during the school day by providing thousands of youth with the opportunity to attend Champions Clubs during the after-school hours.
