Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: In December 2016, New Ground services were expanded to serve a greater number of Veterans and their families. Working directly with the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VA), New Ground began offering our various programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their HUD-VASH (Veteran Administration Supportive Housing) Program. The Veterans and their families participating in the HUD-VASH Program have been certified homeless by the Northport VA and under a housing first model, placed throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties in housing units willing to work with VA requirements and accept the VASH housing subsidy. New Ground services are also being provided preemptively to homeless Veteran households currently on the wait list for the VASH Program. VASH Veteran households are offered weekly comprehensive social work services by New Ground through the following: Financial Literacy Program, Career Development Program, Education Assistance Program, Education Advocacy Program, Reading All-Stars Program, Tutoring Program and the Parent/ Adult Workshop Program. All Veteran households create Individual Service Plans outlining self-defined goals to accomplish and all the steps necessary to meet these. The Financial Literacy Program assists with management of financial circumstances through budget development and maintenance, a review of banking options, debt management and credit report repairs. During social work sessions, tips and tools for tracking income/expenses and planning for savings are reviewed regularly. Social Workers assist with accessing credit reports, reviewing and understanding what impacts the score, implementing strategies to build positive credit and preventing identify theft. Social Workers also help with gaining access to service and non-service connected benefits and referrals to appropriate VA resources when necessary. The Career Development Program serves the unemployed, underemployed, or those looking to further career and professional development and includes assistance with creation of resumes, referrals to local career service agencies, review of websites and techniques to launch an effective employment search and practice of strong interviewing skills. Social Workers help to determine interests and potential career fields as well as feasibility of completion and funding resources. New Grounds Education Assistance and Tutoring Programs then assist Veterans to complete their chosen academic programs successfully. Education is also a focus for the children. New Ground provides education advocacy to ensure that all school age children are appropriately placed in school and receiving needed services to be successful, and the Reading All-Stars Program and Tutoring Program to guarantee improvements in areas of difficulty. Our Parent/ Adult Workshop Program provides essential information on various topics critical to the Veterans and families of New Ground. Topics have included healthy eating on a budget, protecting your child from bullying, cyber-safety for your children, navigating financial aid, and various financial literacy themes. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES VARIOUS SMALLER PROGRAMS WHICH ALL HAVE A COMMON GOAL TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF HOMELESSNESS.

IRS990/MissionDesc0WE MAINTAIN THAT THE KEY TO BREAKING THE CYCLE OF HOMELESSNESS IS NOT ONLY TO PROVIDE SHORT-TERM ASSISTANCE TO HOMELESS FAMILIES AND VETERANS, BUT TO WORK AT ELIMINATING ITS ROOT CAUSES SO THESE INDIVIDUALS CAN BECOME, AND REMAIN, SELF-SUPPORTING. WE IDENTIFY, AND THEN RESPOND TO, THOSE AT-RISK WITH PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL, TECHNICAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. THIS EMPOWERS THESE FAMILIES AND VETERANS, ENABLING THEM TO FUNCTION INDEPENDENTLY. WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH INSTITUTIONS IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR, NEW GROUND WORKS WITH EXISTING AGENCIES TO BETTER RESPOND TO THE GROWING NEEDS AND CHALLENGES OF LONG ISLAND'S HOMELESS POPULATION.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Reading All Stars Program was developed to assist homeless children ranging from kindergarten 12th grade as well as some adults in the LTHP and JSP. Homeless children have statistically been found to read below grade level thus affecting their overall academic performance. This program improves basic reading skills including comprehension, vocabulary, silent reading skills, and more. A reading specialist/tutor works with each student to ensure improvement in these areas. The student utilizes a computerized reading program to also improve these reading skills. Each participants progress is recorded and monitored through the online program and tutor oversight to gauge progress and determine areas for greater assistance and support.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Launched in April 2012, the JumpStart Program provides the same intensive education services and social work assistance to an additional five-ten families who are on the wait list for entrance into the Long Term Housing Program. Every JSP family meets with their New Ground Social Worker on a weekly basis, to get a jump start on working toward their outlined goals for future self-sufficiency and independence. These families are homeless and awaiting placement into a housing unit should they be accepted into the LTHP. Parents in the households work on goals of financial literacy, education advancement and employment while children receive education assistance through New Grounds many education programs.
