“Part III Statement of Program Description: In 2024,Sebago welcomed almost 60 new members, mostly novice paddlers. Our teams of trip leaders and coaches organized a numerous instruction sessions and by seasons end we had more than two dozen paddlers with the skills to get safely on the water. In addition, we offered a full calendar of paddles and training opportunities for our members. Our three open house days continued in partnership with our local New York State Senator. Sebago, the Senator and her staff hosted youth groups and active seniors, with each open house providing more than 100 people on each day the opportunity to experience Jamaica Bay in kayaks, canoes, small sailboats and other rowing gigs. Virtually all the participants were urban, first time boaters with great diversity. We have also invested in new storage racks, in support of expanding our canoe program. The new racks are suitable for outrigger canoes. This is a fast-growing activity committee and these new members are introducing new skills. Additional community outreach includes new and ongoing partnerships with Outdoor Afro (a national nonprofit that reconnects Black people to the outdoors through recreation, education and conservation); the Jamaica Bay Science and Resilience Institute (community members, scientists and policy experts work to on the sustainability and resilience of the Jamaica Bay watershed); the Billion Oyster Project (city wide, school-based program to increase the number of oysters in New York City waterways); New York University Concrete Canoe program (training to race student-built, concrete canoes by the Civil Engineering Department); American Littoral Society (annual trash census engaging several dozen youths). We partnered with other human powered boating groups in New York City coordinating regional paddles. Current membership is approximately 225 with a waiting list.”
