SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAMSThe JCC continues to offer programs with an extensive array of services for children, teens, and adults with Autism and various other Developmental Disabilities. Camp Kehilla, our day camp program for high functioning special needs children had such a successful summer season that it led to the creation of Kehilla Saturdays mini-day camp program, which was held during the school year. This program is a way to reunite with camp friends and staff while participating in traditional camp activities and practicing social skills. The JCC continued the highly structured, evidence-based BOOST! program for children and teens with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This program is based on the TEACCH method of how individuals with Autism learn, and provides these children and teens with the opportunity to enhance and improve their social skills. The BOOST! program has been recognized for its outstanding work and received the JCC Association's 2010 Biennial Program and Practice Award, being recognized as an "Exemplary Program!"The Wednesday Adult Social Club, a social skill building program for high-functioning adults with special needs held its first Mixer with the special needs adult group of The JCC of the Greater Five Towns. The Mixer offered both JCC adult groups more social opportunities, a chance to practice social skills, and a chance to meet new people.The Special Needs Center actively collaborated with the Health and Wellness Center to provide children, teens and adults with special needs personal training opportunities and group exercise classes. This partnership provided these individuals great opportunities to become more physically fit and participate in the same activities as their typically-developing peers.

Activity 3

SENIOR PROGRAMSThe JCC partnered with The Bristal Assisted Living, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and the Long Island Alzheimer's Association to hold CARE Day, which provided important information about senior care to over 100 caregivers and professionals. This program won the JCCA 2010 Biennial Program and Practice Award.The Friendly Visiting program provided more than 20 homebound/isolated seniors in our community with a volunteer visitor throughout the year.G.E.M.S. (Group Educational Memory Strengthening) has celebrated its one-year anniversary. The group is currently functioning at maximum capacity, assisting those with the early stages of memory loss.The Friendship Circle Program assisted over 115 Nassau County families with the care of seniors who are frail and or cognitively impaired, providing many days of fun and therapy, while providing vital respite for their caregivers. The Grand Angels program pairs seniors with people in the special needs program at the JCC, forming unique relationships. Both the seniors and participants are reaping the rewards of this very special program.The JCC, in partnership with the Town of North Hempstead/Project Independence and Zucker -Hillside Hospital, provided ongoing free memory screenings.
