Individuals may obtain membership in the organization by application and meeting the qualifications stated in the governing documents. Members elect the executive committee and approve significant decisions of the executive committee. Members do not receive a share of profits, excess dues or a share of the organization's net assets upon the organization's dissolution.

Officers are elected annually by the members.

Members of the fire department must approve the following governing board decisions: policy changes, changes in the by-laws, changes in the constitution, changes in operating procedures and financial decisions in excess of a specified amount.

A copy of form 990 is emailed to each member of the executive committee prior to its filing with the irs. Each board member is requested to review the form and respond with any questions to the board president or treasurer.

Form 990, part vi, section b, line 15: kent volunteer fire department does not compensate any of the organization's officers, other than ambulance call stipends that are offered to all members that meet the criteria. The fire department does not have any employees, therefore, the department has no need to adopt a compensation policy.

The form 990 is available upon written request to the governing board. The governing board will then respond with a date and time that the individual may review the document at the organization's location. The organization was created in 1911 and they do not have a copy of the original application form 1023. Therefore, they are unable to make this form available to the public.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Kent volunteer fire department, inc. Is a not-for-profit organization that is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, except for income derived from unrelated business activities. For the year ended december 31, 2018 the organization has determined that no income taxes are due for its activities. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes has been recorded in the financial statements. The fire department has evaluated and concluded that there are no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to or disclosures in their financial statements. Tax returns filed for years ending december 31, 2015 and later are open for examination by federal and state government authorities.

KVFD PROVIDED MANY ACTIVITIES DURING FIRE PREVENTION WEEK ENCOURAGING FIRE PREVENTION AND SAFETY INCLUDING HOLDING AN EDUCATIONAL OPEN HOUSE WITH A LIVE-BURN, HANDS-ON FIRE EXTINGUISHER USE LESSONS AND BY VISITING LOCAL SCHOOLS. DURING EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK, THE DEPARTMENT PROMOTED PUBLIC AWARENESS BY AGAIN OFFERING AN OPEN HOUSE PROVIDING FREE BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS, FREE "FILE OF LIFE" FORMS AND TOURS OF THE TWO AMBULANCES WITH DEMONSTRATIONS OF RELATED LIFE-SAVING EQUIPMENT. KVFD JOINED A CONNECTICUT STATE PROGRAM IN 2014 WHICH MAKES THE TOWN OF KENT A HEART-SAFE COMMUNITY, AND HAS CONTINUED ITS COMMITMENT BY INSTITUTING A PROGRAM WHICH PROVIDES IMPROVED CARDIAC RESPONSE UTILIZING THE "CHAIN OF SURVIVAL" FOR EARLY 911 ACCESS, CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION, DEFIBRILLATION AND ADVANCED CARE AS WELL AS CPR TRAINING TO THE PUBLIC CLASSES AND TOWN WIDE FUNCTIONS.
