Trauma healing training & support programs were developed to assist local counselors in Burundi, Africa as the country seeks to heal from decades of ethnic conflict. Children, women, families and entire communities in this small central African country have been traumatized from generations of violence, war and extreme poverty. Healing and reconciliaton are paramount to successful and lasting peace iniatives in the area. 3 distinct training modules and a community therapeutic day camp were developed, complete with necessary therapeutic supplies and equipment. At the request of the local organization in Burundi, additional training modules are being developed. A team was preparing to travel once again to Burundi in 2015 to provide additional training, instruction, counseling, support and therapeutic iniatives relevant to the culture and needs of the community. However, due to civil unrest in light of political elections, the team will travel another year. Continued communication is in place to monitor accomplishments as the local counselors apply therapeutic principles in community programs.A grant was awarded to assist Trauma Healing & Reconciliation Services ("THARS" - www.THARS.org) with program facility improvements in Burundi, Africa.$300$0
A summer day camp program, Valley Day Camp, has been developed for children ages 6 to 12 years with emotional, behavioral, or social challenges. The camp is recreational, fun, and offers traditional summer camp activities. Valley Day Camp is unique in that specialized programming is built into the daily activities to provide opportunities for growth in friendship skills, learning about feelings, communication and assertiveness, behavior management/self control, self worth, and self-confidence. A low camper to staff ratio and well-trained camp counselors who have experience in mental health and education provide an exciting, safe, structured, and enjoyable atmosphere for each child. The staff not only uses planned times for teaching skills, but the recreational atmosphere provides opportunities for staff to coach children throughout the day in practicing the skills they are learning. The camp did not run during 2015.$0$0
